Risky Drinking - More than Drunk Driving

St. Patrick's Day is approaching, and over the next several days, celebrations will likely involve high levels of drinking. Holiday celebrations such as St. Patrick's Day raise valid concerns about driving while under the influence, which will be reflected in public service announcements, designated driver awareness and other "safe rides" programs.

The truth is that, in southeastern Wisconsin, risky consumption of alcohol is the norm year-round - not only on holidays. Our state has one of the highest binge drinking rates in the nation; and driving while intoxicated is only one of the negative consequences of consuming too much alcohol. Risky drinking is associated with arguments with a spouse; poor work performance; accidents and injuries; vulnerability to sexual assault or other crimes; and risk of developing an addiction to alcohol and/or an alcohol-related illness.

It can be difficult to determine when help is necessary, where to go for appropriate assistance, and how to make the right connections.

IMPACT provides free consultation and referral to those who are concerned about themselves or a loved one. Counselors respond to people who call with concerns about their alcohol use or their concerns about the way their loved ones are using alcohol.

By the end of their conversation with an IMPACT counselor, our clients understand their options and feel confident about taking the next step. In follow-up, 75% of people who contact IMPACT report a reduction in how much and how often they drink.

Changing A Culture

Changing a region's culture doesn't happen overnight, especially when you're talking about the drinking culture in Wisconsin.

But alcohol's role in the special occasions and daily habits of our lives has made drinking its own tradition, and drinking to get drunk a celebrated ritual. People in our state have lost perspective of what is considered normal, and view the consequences as acceptable.

Stay tuned, because next month, IMPACT will launch "Wisconsin on Tap" a strategy to support stop drinking [SO MUCH] wisconsin, our ongoing campaign to increase awareness about risky drinking and change the region's culture.
