Principal's Message

Dear Saint John School families,

It is hard to believe, but the first trimester will be finished on Friday. The students have been very engaged in both faith and academics during the first few months of school. There have been many accomplishments already, but the one that has already made an immediate impact has been the Faith in Action program. Through the leadership of the middle school students, our entire student body has risen to the challenge of putting others first. These outreach activities have provided the entire school community with the opportunity to truly put our Catholic faith into action through serving others.

A special thank you goes to Mrs. Roberts, who took on the challenge of a new program and in a short amount of time has developed a faith-based curriculum that all students will benefit from. Thank you to all the staff and parent volunteers who have also assisted her in this endeavor. I have enclosed Mrs. Robert's recap of outreach projects from the first trimester.

FIA helped promote the first two events of the trimester: St. John's SVDP Friends of the Poor Walk-Sept. 20.

Childhood Cancer Awareness-raised $1,166 (yellow attire and lemonade).

Also, in September, all three FIA classes helped bag beans and rice and sort cans for parish food pantry.

In October, the FIA seventh graders picked 330 pounds of lemons that were donated to the parish food pantry and raised almost $87 in donations in addition to supplies for the beauty booth at the Fall Festival. Between the beauty and football booths, the students raised about $500. It was divided equally between two charities, both of which help protect people with and from life-threatening diseases: the Against Malaria Foundation, which buys and distributes mosquito nets, and Cure JM, which supports research to cure juvenile myositis (one of the seventh graders has a brother with JM who graduated from St. John's and is now at Cathedral).

The eighth graders' FIA projects, collecting home-baked cookies for prisoners who attend a Kairos retreat weekend and collecting personal hygiene items to make kits for the parish food pantry, were very successful. They collected almost 800 cookies and were able to make 137 hygiene kits with an average of about 8-10 items in each. That did not include even more bulk items that were also donated to the food pantry to be handed out individually. The same eighth graders also served breakfast at Saint Vincent de Paul Village Oct. 22, working nonstop for three hours doing everything from serving food, to bussing and setting tables, to sweeping, mopping, and wiping down, to making sack lunches, among other duties. They represented St. John School in the most stellar way as they carried out the works of mercy, fed the hungry and gave drink to the thirsty. Eighth graders also chose to give three small microloans to people in Asia and Africa.

The sixth graders FIA project was Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. Every child in the school received a UNICEF box and information sheet to bring home. The outreach was a phenomenal success with students raising $2,305 for this great cause.

Congratulations to our entire community for coming together to put our faith into action.

Peace and blessings to you and your family.

Annual Fund Update: Tomorrow is Built Today

Thank you to all who have participated in our Annual Fund!  We are currently at about a 11% participation rate with every grade having donated at some level, and $42,000 raised so far! Several families have also been surprised to find that their employers or company has a matching program and Saint John School qualifies to be matched. Please don't forget to see if your company matches and let us know so we can help you through the process if needed and log your participation. Let's get to 100% participation!

Donations to our Annual Fund can be made online through the secure PayPal link on our website or by completing a donation form and submitting to the office.

Don't forget to check out all the new features available through the website. Our Development page keeps you current on the fundraising opportunities available. We have also streamlined our site and added new features as well.

ATHLETICS CORNER

Coach Jones and Mrs. Roberts will be conducting the FITNESSGRAM fitness assessment during October-November.  The state program is a measurement of good health as opposed to athletic ability. The rest of the details are on School Speak and you may also go to the web site: www.FITNESSGRAM.net/faqparents for more information.

Rugby!
A special thank you to Mrs. Alberton who brought rugby instruction to our P.E. classes. The instructor, Hannah, is training for the 2016 Olympics! It's important to know that this will be the first year rugby will be played by both men and women at Olympics. We wish her the best in this incredible achievement!

As always, athletic game schedules can be found here

Please consider supporting our teams at home games whether or not your child is playing. Our teams love to have your support!

Good luck Eagles!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Coming soon:

    • Monday, November 10 is a school holiday. When we put together our calendar this past summer, we decided to honor our service men and women on Monday rather than Tuesday (Veterans Day) because it could be more beneficial for the students' learning process to have four days of instruction in sequence rather than going for one day, taking a day off, and then restarting the week again on Wednesday.

    • Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled for Monday - Wednesday, November 17 - 19. Those days are minimum school days with 12:00 noon dismissal. Please sign up for a time to meet with the teachers on iVolunteer. There is link to this on School Speak and the school website as well.

ALL SCHOOL THANKSGIVING OUTREACH

The entire school is once again participating in a Thanksgiving outreach project helping Brother Benno's, a non-profit, all-volunteer organization that serves the poor and homeless in the North County. 5th grade will be collecting and compiling boxes of Thanksgiving food to give to families in desperate need. All classes have been assigned a particular food item to be brought in beginning Tuesday, November 11th through Tuesday, November 18th. It is our goal to include a ham with each box, so we are extending a general invitation to the entire school with the hope that some families will donate hams. We hope to collect 40 hams to accompany 40 boxes of food.
