Back-to-School Time...
While some of us are sad to see summer go, many welcome September for the flurry of promises that it makes: cooler temperatures, football season, Pumpkin Spice Lattes... and yes, that exciting time of going back to school. While most families celebrate this time with shopping sprees for new clothes, backpacks, and school supplies, not all families have the ability to send their sons and daughters back to their friends with the newest trends and flash.

At PHFS, we love getting school supplies to help the children we serve feel more confident in themselves as they begin this new year in their education. Luckily, we have several individual and group donors to help our students be their best selves and worry less as they return back to school.

Please consider making a back-to-school donation on behalf of a student that you know - whether it's your son/daughter, little cousin, or the kid you babysit - to help make another child's transition back to school a little easier. We are so proud that every child we see in shelter has an opportunity to go to school, and we want to encourage their growth as much as possible.

Thank You, Eve!

PHFS would like to honor long-time Meal Provider, Eve Rosenfeld, this month. After more than a decade of providing delicious, home-cooked meals (alongside Alan Rosenfeld, Michael Goldman, Mary Scalone, and Jane Vereschagen), Eve is now retiring from her volunteer positions at Goose Hollow and is setting her sights on spending more time with family and friends.

Eve was one of the founding members of NW Portland Ministries (through her work with Beth Israel). An article about the Goose Hollow Family Shelter in the newspaper sparked her interest, and she and her husband, Alan, began volunteering as Overnight Hosts shortly thereafter.

As the Goose Hollow Family Shelter evolved over the years, Eve transitioned to the role of Meal Provider, bringing dinner for eight families. She recruited new volunteers and formed a group, bringing meals every third Wednesday of the month for many years. She was also a member of the Goose Hollow Advisory Council, and part of the team that hired PHFS Executive Director, Brandi Tuck.

Eve worked tirelessly to encourage new volunteers, mentor them, and enhance the services of Portland Homeless Family Solutions. In all her volunteer work, she has been generous with her time, thoughtful in her relationships, and always displayed immense compassion towards the people she served.

On behalf of the guests, board, and staff at PHFS, we want to thank Eve for her dedication and service. Eve, your impact has been invaluable, and we wish you well in your future pursuits.

Meet Sharon Zhang: Local Girl Scout With a Creative Flare

"Hi everyone, my name is Sharon. I am a Girl Scout from Troop 40933, and recently completed my Gold Award project for the Goose Hollow Family Shelter, which requires a Girl Scout to put in at least 80 hours of work to address a community issue effectively and sustainably. I chose to create a structured self-expression program at Goose Hollow that would allow the kids to discover new interests and channel their energy into something non-physical while also raising their self-esteem.

I have volunteered at Goose Hollow as a Kid Time Host for more than two years. Over time, I realized that the kids have very strong interests in arts and crafts. After finding out that Goose Hollow did not have an existing arts and crafts program (and wanted one), I decided to design my own and implement it with the help of Executive Director, Brandi Tuck, and Volunteer Coordinator, Matt Kertman, and my Girl Scout troop leader, Julia Churchill.

I divided my project into two main components: creating a self-expression activities book and finding the materials to support the activities. To create the book, I researched existing curricula of craft professionals and art schools, sifting out kid-appropriate activities. I narrowed the list down to 15 activities to be carried out every night on a three-week cycle. I had a counselor at my school with expertise in the area check over the activities.

The second part of my project involved finding the materials to carry out the self-expression activities. To do this, I emailed and cold-called many local, art supply businesses. Currently, the program has five wonderful sponsors: SCRAPMimosa Studios,CollageThe Naked Sheep Knit Shop, and Piccolo Mondo Toys.

Carrying out the project went relatively smoothly, but the most difficult task for me was multitasking; at one point in the spring, I was editing the activities book, meeting with peers to edit it, contacting businesses, communicating with key clubs and the shelter coordinators, and updating my project's blog. Although I hit a few roadblocks along the way, I learned valuable life skills such as organization, time management, and how to maintain sponsor relationships.

My project was a wonderful learning experience, but I am even more excited to see the program implemented in the shelter. If you would like to learn more about my project, I keep a blog at: sharonsgirlscoutgoldproject.blogspot.com. Thanks!"

PHFS Staff Retreat at "Chateau Charles"
For the past two weeks, Goose Hollow Family Shelter was closed for its annual deep cleaning. This gave PHFS staff some very rare and valuable time to gather together to discuss shelter improvements and do general team building.

We are so fortunate to have major supporter, Tony Charles, and his family open their beautiful home up to us to make this time for PHFS staff even more special and fun. Thank you so much, Charles family, for your extreme hospitality and pure kindness. We had a blast, and just could not be more grateful for you!!!
Congratulations! You made it to the bottom.
To honor all of you students and teachers that are struggling to get back into the swing of things this year, listen to this pep talk from Kid President himself.

After all, who DOESN'T benefit from a talk from Kid President?!

Thanks for all you do!
