An Italian Revelation!

In recent years, savvy Italian wine importers have begun mining the neglected and overlooked southern Italian wine regions.  Everyone knows the Northern Italian regions like Tuscany, Piedmont and the Veneto, but how many wines from Puglia, Campania, Basilicata or Molise have you had? There are great wine traditions in these obscure regions and great winemakers too.
One of our best recent finds comes from Small Vineyards - an importer who focuses on top quality, small production wines from family owned properties.  Casa Contini is located in Molise on the southern Adriatic coast and this wine is from the tiny d.o.c. of Brindisi.  The blend is based on the local varietal Negroamaro, and the wine is made much more like a top-quality Chianti Classico Riserva.  And make no mistake - it rivals a top Chianti Classico Riserva in every way but price!

2011 Casa Contini Brindisi Riserva

"A truly elegant, lush Negroamaro-based wine, with classic alluring, dark fruits and exotic spices. Aged 2 years in 50 hl Slavonian oak barrels, it boasts lovely, ripe  tannins, and a smoothness that belies the typical southern Italian wine category. An extraordinary value, and a unique and distinctive wine that is very hard to find at this price point!"
