 STEM Initiatives Receive Grant
CCS creates and supports STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) initiatives each year that serve our Pre-K through 12th grade students.
The CCS STEM initiative recently received a grant of $5,200 to help fund our ongoing programs! Currently, key STEM programs include robotics, environmental education, chess, technology in science integration, math competitions to name a few. This school year alone, STEM activities have included summer camps, Experience the Experiment (Elementary Campus), month-long Water Project, Soil Conservation (Elementary Campus), and involvement in the national Hour of Code.
Gina Smearsoll, CCS Stem Coordinator, is thrilled with the donation, which will be used wisely within the program.

"Peter Pan" Cast Receives Professional Flying Training
In January, some of the CCS "Peter Pan" cast headed to ZFX Flying Effects in Louisville for professional flying training. The Theatre Department has been fundraising in order to pay for this specific training, with the main goal of student safety. Only professionals from this company and The Aronoff Center will be handling the flying aspects of our show at all times.
The cast is also receiving professional sword fighting training, as well as special dialect training. These professionals have worked with the CCS Theatre Department before on shows like The Three Muskateers and Pride and Prejudice. When our Theatre Department takes on a project, they do it right!
Tickets are on sale now for CCS' "Peter Pan", showing at the Aronoff Center's Jarson Kaplan Theater, March 4th-7th.

 CCS Student Wins 5th in District Spelling Bee
Congratulations to CCS 5th grade student, Ema Okpohworho, who placed 5th overall at the 2015 ACSI District Spelling Bee.
This event featured a field of over 100 students, each of whom had already won spelling bee events at his or her school. She will move on to the regional championships in February! Congratulations Ema!

CCS Students in Shakespeare Competition
In conjunction with The Cincinnati Branch of the English-Speaking Union's 2015 Shakespeare Competition, CCS held our competition on January 15th, with over a dozen Senior High students participating. The competition features students presenting Shakespeareian monologues (from memory) to judges, in hopes of winning the school level contest. The results were as follows: First Place - Bernadette Beacham, Second Place - Hannah Smith, Third Place - Alex DunmanBernadette will represent CCS at the Cincinnati competition in February, with hopes of qualifying for the national competition in New York City, then possibly London! Good luck, Bernadette!

 CCS Student Skoolbo Program Winner
CCS 2nd grader, Jane Olaniyan, was the first Elementary student to receive 10,000 correct answers in the SkoolBo language arts/math program! Students answer math and language arts questions in a game format for enrichment. Currently, Jane has answered over 13,000 questions correctly, and has the SkoolBo trophy on her desk.
Mrs. Schmidt's 2nd grade class was also in the top 10 classes in Ohio to excel in the SkoolBo program!

Ladies' Alumni Basketball Game a Slam Dunk
At the end of December, CCS alumni ladies came to play each other in a friendly game of basketball. Fun was had by all who played and cheered them on.
Bake sale funds were also collected and donated to the Lauren Hill Foundation during the event. CCS Athletic Boosters took the bake sale total raised and matched it for the fundraiser as well, along with including a percentage of Cougar Cave sales that evening. Great job, everyone!

Annual Dodgball/Pizza Fundraiser a Success
We would like to express our gratitude for all who helped or participated in the Junior Class Dodgeball/Pizza Fundraiser.
We made over $500! Thank you for making this a successful fundraiser by playing on a team, refereeing, purchasing pizza, or just cheering! (All proceeds go to support Prom.)

CCS Art Students Win in Scholastic Competition
Held through February 6th, the Scholastic Art Exhibition is taking place at the Art Academy of Cincinnati. This is a regional competition with thousands of entries. Eleven CCS students (Rebecca Laughlin, Olivia Holder, Dylan Graves, Sarah Bennett, Bryan Snyder, Alyssa Washington, Payton Keiner, Libby King, Alexis Cooper, Zachary Parker, & Isabella Collins) won awards in the areas of fashion design, drawing, sculpture, photography and digital art.
Gold Key winner, Rebecca Laughlin, with "Lichen It," in the Photography category, will go on and be judged nationally as well.

Seniors' Medieval Feast
On January 15th, the seniors planned for and prepared a Medieval Feast to go along with their study of Beowulf and The Canterbury Tales.
All the senior English classes/teachers were involved in the planning. Students prepared and brought in medieval-type food and drink, and gave short presentations on medieval fashion, as well as played board games from the Middle Ages.

Honors Chemistry Project Completed
Mrs. Granger's Senior High Honors Chemistry Class just completed their quarterly newsletter, which is a group project done outside of class and a requirement for her Honors Chemistry course. The project requires a researcher, editor, cartoonist, publisher, etc. Mrs. Granger is always pleased with their results, and said, "I am hands off when it comes to what they produce."  Athletics Kudos
- Congratulations to Josh Oates for being named the Channel 5 Beacon Orthopaedics Primetime Performer of the Week for his basketball performance on January 16th. He scored 25 points in the Cougars' win over New Miami, featuring seven three-point shots.
- MVC Athletes of the Week, January 5th: Bowling, Josh Carney - Bowling, game average of 193, Bowling, Madison Brockman, game average of 184. Terence Hubbard, Senior Guard/Forward, Basketball. Terence scored 13 points and seven rebounds in the game against St. Bernard, 34-30 win, which enabled Cincinnati Christian to take sole possession of first place in the Miami Valley Conference, Gray Division. Grace Edmondston, Freshman Basketball, 13 points, 15 rebounds against Cedarville, 10 points, 10 rebounds, and four blocks against Emmanuel Christian in the Emmanuel Christian Holiday Classic.
- MVC Athletes of the Week, January 26th: Justin Lewis, Junior Bowler
1st-year bowler, compiled six-game average of 167 with high game of 197.
Payton Keiner, Sophomore Swimmer, two 9th place finishes (50 Free and 100 Back), 3rd place finish (200 Back) at the Southwest Ohio High School Classic. This was the largest high school swim meet in the country, with 2900 swimmers, including both DI and DII athletes. Terence Hubbard, Senior Guard/Forward, Basketball, scored 14 points, nine rebounds, and two steals in the Cougars' win over Lockland.

2014 CCS Alumnus Visits China
CCS Alumnus Jenna VanWeelden ('14), a Freshman at Taylor University, traveled to China for nearly two weeks as part of the university's January Honors Guild. Students traveled to Beijing, Xi'an, Nanjing, and Shanghai, learning within the theme of "Arts and Ideas in China." In addition to cultural and historic enrichment stops throughout the country, students met with Chinese Christian youth, workers, and others in ministry.
