Dear Friends,
New Strategic Partnership with Gideons International

We are ecstatic  to announce the forging of a strategic partnership with Gideons International who will be providing Seafarer's Friend with Bibles in many languages and direct delivery to our Chelsea office. We will no longer have the burden of wondering where our next restock of Bibles will come from, as Gideons International will be providing for this aspect of our ministry.  What a blessing this will be to our organization. We are so grateful to Gideons International for their desire to partner with us!

Rob Bacon, our Port Chaplain in Boston, was put in touch with David Hussey, Regional Representative for Gideons, by Amy Cook, Resource Coordinator for the Episcopal Diocese of MA.   Thank you David for pointing us in the right direction.  God is good, all the time!

Gracious Book Donation by Harvard Business Review

An enormous thanks to Lisa Wieland, Chief Administrative Officer- Massport Maritime Division, for spreading the word about our need for reading materials for the seafarers.  In response, we were contacted by Jessica Avery, Director, Business Planning and Analysis with Harvard Business Review Press and Greg Mroczek, Manufacturing/Inventory Manager, Harvard Business Publishing.   When Greg said " All hands on deck" with the project, he wasn't kidding.  Seafarer's Friend is now the proud owner of a vast selection of HBR books, over 1,000 in total!  If we had more storeroom, they would have doubled that amount.  TALK ABOUT GENEROUS!!!!!!

We'd also like to acknowledge George Itz with Boston Freight Systems for allowing us to use their shipping dock, and Charlie Itz (SFF Board member and owner of Itz-Ohlson Transport) for personally delivering the boat load of books for the last leg of the route), in his pick-up truck to our Chelsea office!  So many things to be thankful for and so many people to thank!

Donation of Beautifully Crafted Wooden Crosses and Testimony of a Transformed Life

We would like to recognize and thank Charlie Mead of Charlestown, NH, for his heart-felt donation of uniquely crafted wooden crosses and compelling testimony, A Message of Hope, for distribution to  the seafarers.  We also want to recognize Jane Mead, Charlie's sister and former SFF Board member, for coordinating the donation.

Wooden crosses designed by Charlie Mead, ready to set sail on the Seven Seas!

A Ship Visit Story: They Just Came For Gloves
It was right after New Years when I boarded the New England that comes into Portland, ME almost every week from St Johns, Canada. I was visiting around lunchtime and had a chance to sit down with about eight of the crew to share a meal together. The gentlemen I joined that day were all Filipinos who are always very hospitable.

Still being fairly new at this whole ship visiting ministry of Seafarer's Friend, I continually am amazed at how each visit is different. Sometimes it's easy to feel like a phone-card salesmen, but then I am reminded that the service we provide for the crews helps them stay connected with their families thousands of miles away. That alone is a great thing and these crewmen and women are grateful if it just ends here. The visit that day was so much more for three of the crew I met during our lunch together.

Their names were Andrew, Jose and Fino, all Filipinos, asking if we had any gloves at the Center. I told them we did have some gloves and perhaps some more items they may need to make their time on board a little easier. I took them to the Center and one would have thought Andrew, Jose, and Fino had won the lottery. I told them that all the things on the shelves were donated by local churches in the area and they were free to take anything they needed. They only came for gloves but walked away with some shoes, books, hats and other necessities. They were so grateful someone cared about them enough to donate these items.

After spending some time together at the Center, I took them to the store for some shopping needs and then back to their ship. We talked at length about their families and I wanted them to know how honored I was to meet them, and how impressed I was with the way they sacrifice so much to support not only their wives and children, but parents and siblings that are back home and in need. It was also another reminder of how dangerous the life of a seaman can be, after the sinking of a cargo ship off the coast of Vietnam just a few days before my visit, killed three crewmen on board.

Every ship visit is an opportunity to hear the stories of crewmen, and gain new insights into the unique and challenging lives of seafarers; a life of hard work and often danger, far away from home and family. But even better, every ship visit is a chance to love, acknowledge, and honor these men and women with our time and presence, in essence, it's a chance to serve Christ. We invite and encourage you to come on board with our ministry and the mission of Seafarer's Friend.
