Award Events Honor Faculty, Students

Faculty recognized for published research;

Students honored for accomplishments in academics and service

In two events on Friday, May 7, the New York College of Podiatric Medicine recognized students and faculty who have distinguished themselves.

    At the Faculty Author Recognition Event, 17 NYCPM faculty, adjunct faculty, staff, and administration and 12 students were recognized for their contributions to scholarly writing through published research in 2014. Michael J. Trepal, DPM ('81), FACFAS, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean, said that "the number of awards being given today are an indication of the intellectual growth of our institution." 

 

    

Timothy Miller received the American Board of Podiatric Medicine Graduate Merit Award, a new award this year, presented by the organization's president, 

Michael DellaCorte, DPM ('81). 


    In his introduction to the compiled Faculty Bibliography, NYCPM President and CEO Louis L. Levine wrote that he hoped "that the Faculty Bibliography ... will advance the strong tradition of scholarly inquiry that exists among the faculty at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine."

Lisa Lee to Succeed Dr. Lowy as Dean;

Both Effective July 1

On May 11, President and CEO Louis L. Levine, Michael J. Trepal, DPM, VP for Academic Affairs and Dean, and Joel A. Benjamin B. Choi, BA, MS, JD

 

Benjamin B. Choi, Esq. joined the NYCPM Board of Trustees in May 2014. He is the Chief Municipal Prosecutor on behalf of the State of New Jersey within the statutory jurisdictions of the Municipal Courts in the cities of Hoboken and Avon-By-The-Sea.  He has held his position in Avon-By-The-Sea since 2004, and in Hoboken since 2009.  In January of 2014, Mr. Choi became Managing Partner at The Choi Law Group LLC, based in Rutherford, New Jersey ... Dr. Reidenberg Wins First Years' Student Choice Award with 'Unique and Enviable' Anatomy Instruction

Joy Reidenberg, PhD, does not take anatomy lightly, especially when she's hoisting a heavy-looking humpback whale vertebra to compare it to its relatively diminutive human counterpart. As an adjunct professor of pre-clinical sciences at NYCPM, she teaches gross anatomy and clinical anatomy (except of the lower extremity) to freshmen, and works to make it memorable.

 

    To show the functions of and differences between dermatomes and sensory fields, for example, she gave out latex gloves and markers and asked the students to color the gloves to demonstrate each. "That's as good as hands-on gets!" Dr. Reidenberg said. To give a living demonstration of the crowded relationships among parts of female anatomy, she draped three students in sheets and positioned them very close together.

In Memoriam

Former NYCPM President

Murray Edelstein, DPM ('42)

 

Murray Edelstein, DPM ('42) passed away in early May at age 95. He was a graduate of and a former President of the New York College of Podiatric Medicine; he served for six years beginning in 1973, 

and rejuvenated the school, according to his obituary in the  New York Times . He initially practiced in Brooklyn, NY, and returned to private practice in West Palm Beach, Florida after he left the College. He had also been a leader in the profession and held a number of local, state and national positions, including vice chairman of The Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) and president of the New York State Podiatric Medicine Society. The father of Nicholas Argerakis, DPM ('09), Dr. George P. Argerakis, passed away in early May. The College extends condolences to Dr. Argerakis and his family. 

Jay Newman, DPM ('78), Welcomes Daughter to Practice

Jay Newman, DPM ('78), has welcomed his daughter, Laura Newman, to join him in practice in Palm Beach County, Florida. Dr. Laura Newman completed her residency at Jackson Memorial North, Florida.
