HOSTOS ALUMNUS ELVIS BOVES REPRESENTS THE COLLEGE AT UNIVISION'S NATIONAL  

TOWN HALL ON EDUCATION 

 

 
Hostos alumnus Elvis Boves was selected to represent Hostos Community College in Univision's award-winning "Education Week" Town Hall event titled,
"La Educaci�n Est� a Tu Alcance" (Education is Within Your Reach). Boves graduated in 2013 and excelled in math and engineering.

Univision's Education Week has several multi-media components including the National Town Hall which was moderated by award-winning journalist Mar�a Elena Salinas, co-anchor of "Noticiero Univisi�n" (Univision News), and Pamela Silva Conde, co-anchor of Univision's weekday newsmagazine
"Primer Impacto" (First Impact).

 

FALL LECTURE OF THE SOCIAL SCIENCE
SPEAKERS SERIES A ROUSING SUCCESS
 

 

On October 1, 2014, the Social Sciences Unit of the Behavioral and Social Sciences Department held its fall lecture for its "Social Science Speakers Series." 
 
The Hostos family extended a warm welcome to Dr. Eric Foner, the DeWitt Clinton Professor of History at Columbia University, as he came to campus to talk about his upcoming book, Gateway to Freedom: The Hidden History of the Underground Railroad.
ANTONIO MARTORELL BRINGS AN ARTIST'S SENSIBILITY TO HOSTOS175

     

As Hostos Community College continues its yearlong celebration of the 175th birth date of Eugenio Mar�a de Hostos, the College welcomed a special guest on October 21 with the visit of internationally renowned artist Antonio Martorell, affectionately known throughout as, "To�o" Martorell.

In a spirited lecture entitled, "Hostos By Us," Martorell showed a series of paintings, drawings, sculptures and other artwork that perhaps best represented who Eugenio Mar�a de Hostos was, both physically and philosophically.

 

THE JOAQUIN BALAGUER FOUNDATION DONATES A COLLECTION OF BOOKS TO 8TH ANNUAL DOMINICAN BOOK FAIR

 

On Sunday, October 28, 2014 during a ceremony that was part of the 8th Annual Dominican Book Fair in Manhattan, the leaders of La Fundaci�n Joaqu�n Balaguer, announced they were donating a collection of books to Eugenio Mar�a de Hostos Community College.

Hostos alumnus and High School Principal Juan Villar hosted the book fair in his school, the Gregorio Luper�n High School in Manhattan. This year's book fair theme was, El libro es el mejor amigo (A book is your best friend).

THE 2014 LATINO LITERATURE PRIZE
   
The Latin American Writers Institute of Eugenio Mar�a de Hostos Community College of The City University
of New York is pleased to announce that Spanish poet Fernando Valverde has been awarded the 2014 Latino Literature Prize for his collection of poems, La insistencia del da�o ("The Insistence of Harm"), published by Visor in 2014. 

This prize is awarded each year by the Latin American Writers Institute of Hostos to the best book published, in Spanish or English, by an Ibero-American writer during the calendar year.

 

HOSTOS STUDENT LEADERSHIP ACADEMY MEMBERS VOLUNTEER AT 2014 WALK TO END ALZHEIMER'S

     

In its ongoing mission to give support to the
community, 27 Hostos Student Leadership Academy(SLA) members volunteered to work atthe 2014 New York City Walk to End Alzheimer's on October 19, 2014 and sponsored by the Alzheimer's Association.

They arrived at Riverside Park at 97th Street at 6:00 a.m. to set up distribution centers, make coffee and provide breakfast for other volunteers and event participants.

As a student at Hostos Community College, William Rafael Lugo '09 contributed enormously to the Hostos Repertory Theater as an actor, stage manager, sound designer, director, singer, and guitarist.

During the week of October 14, the Hostos Alumni Relations Office hosted a fundraising concert event, collaborated with the Career Services Mini Job Fair and with the Student Government Association for the Women Leaders Conference. Hostos alumni were part of all three events.
