Unity Dinner and Converge on the Capitol
Correction from March 3, 2015 edition:
Council Members Julee LaMure and Dennis Stahl along with City Manager Bil DiLibero, Rio Grande Valley Ambassador for the Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) Hershal Patel and Priyanka Patel attended the 25 th Anniversary Texas Travel Industry Unity Dinner, hosted by the Texas Travel Industry Association (TTIA), as well as Converge on the Capitol, hosted by the Texas Hotel & Lodging Association and sponsored in large part by TTIA and the AAHOA. Their main focus at the event was to talk to members of Texas Congress about the issues affecting tourism in Texas as a whole, and of those, which are priorities to South Padre Island's tourism industry.


Business Appreciation Breakfast

City Manager, Bill DiLibero attended the Business Appreciation Breakfast on Tuesday, March 3, 2015. This annual event is hosted by the UTB School of Business honoring the region's business leaders. 

 

 

Oath of Office Ceremony

Mayor Barry Patel, Mayor Pro-Tem Alex Avalos, Council Member Julee LaMure, and City Manager Bill DiLibero attended the Oath of Office Ceremony of Carlos H. Cascos, which was held Saturday, March 7, 2015 in Austin, Texas. 

 


Spring Break Interviews

Public Information Officer and Film Commissioner Adrian Rodriguez has been coordinating multiple interviews to local news agencies both English and Spanish, network affiliates, and even UTRGV to promote Spring Break and demonstrate our readiness in regards to public safety. Bully Beach Expo

With over 300 Bulldogs and 400 plus participant and attendees, Bully Beach Expo, was a success! The organizers are hoping to make this an annual event.

 

  

 

Spring Break Jam

Heatwave once again held Spring Break Jam Custom Truck and Car Show and Tattoo Expo at the Centre this past weekend. The show normally attracts 3000-5000 attendees and they were expecting even more this year with a Solido concert taking place Saturday afternoon. 



Spring Break Visitors

Spring Break is definitely upon us. Here are some of them in front of the Sand Castle in front of the Visitors Center. 

 



Sidewalks

The contractor began work on the sidewalk in front of Ace Hardware on Wednesday. They should complete the work by next week, weather permitting. 



Routine Maintenance

Public works crews are working on weeding and trimming plants at the entrance medians. Part-time employees are assisting with this task. Crews are also edging the streets along the entrance median. 

The "No Thru Traffic" and "Parking By Permit Only" signs on the side streets west of Laguna have been installed as well. 

 

 

 

Spring Break

The Public Works crews have installed the temporary fencing on the vacant lots along Padre Boulevard to prevent parking in these areas. We have ordered additional roll-off dumpsters next week and message boards for Texas Week. 

 

March Yard of the Month
Congratulations to our March Yard of the Month winners, Rocky & Kelly Romano at 5901 Gulf Blvd. South Padre Island, Texas! The Romano's will  receive  a sign to place in their yard for this month honoring their accomplishment. Thank you Rocky & Kelly for helping keep our Island beautiful!

Cyclovia So Padre
The First Annual Cyclovia So Padre will turn Padre Boulevard into a car-free and care-free environment for families and their pets to bike, run and play together! South Padre Island's first ever Cyclovia will stretch across Padre Boulevard, connecting Bahama Street to Aries Drive, on Saturday, May 2, 2015 from 1pm - 6pm. Cyclovia So Padre will feature three reclovias throughout our route that will offer tons of free outdoor games and activities for kids of all ages! From yoga to tai chi and jiu jhitsu classes, Cyclovia So Padre will have something for everyone. So get up, get out, and come experience South Padre Island in a whole new way!

Recycling
Recyclable items can be taken to Old City Hall every Saturday from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM.

Items that can be recycled are:
  • Newspaper
  • Cardboard
  • Office Paper
  • Aluminum
  • Tin
  • Plastic
To offer a better recycling service please:
  • Compact, crush or break down plastic bottles, cardboard boxes, aluminum cans or any other items that may be reduced in size. This helps us use the most amount of space in the bins.
  • Remove any food, liquid, metal fasteners, adhesive materials or other items that may contaminate the whole load.






Animal Control
Friends of Animal Rescue operates the South Padre Island Recovery Center and Animal Shelter. The shelter is licensed by the State of Texas as an animal shelter and quarantine facility.

The shelter is located at 4908 Padre Blvd and open to the public Tuesday-Sunday from 10 AM to 4:30 PM.  We do make arrangements to meet owners after hours if necessary in order to reunite pets with their families. Friends of Animal Rescue can be reached on their 24 hour hotline at 956-772-1171. Animals that are not claimed within 7-10 days are vetted (including Spay/Neuter) and adopted out to loving homes.

Incentive Policy
The South Padre Island Economic Development Corporation and the City of South Padre Island have approved an incentive policy in order to assist qualified new and existing businesses and to benefit the economic climate on the Island. Businesses can apply for property tax abatements as well as sales tax abatements for improvements that will contribute to the economy of South Padre Island. The City and the EDC will evaluate the applications to determine if they meet the established criteria for the programs.
