First Sunday in Advent - Hope Candle

First Sunday of Advent

Fifth Sunday Offering for the UM Children's Home

Sermon: "It's a Wonderful Advent: Endure It"

Scripture: Isaiah 2:1-5 and Matthew 24:36-44

As we wait in the "in-between" times before Jesus comes again there are many seasons. Especially during this time of the year when the "to-do" list is extra long, how do we endure and find meaning within the daily grind?

No CenterPeace 11/26 - The Church Office will be closed on 11/27 & 11/28

"It's a Wonderful Advent" Premieres This Sunday

This Advent, we'll be using the classic Jimmy Stewart film, It's a Wonderful Life, to help explore the age-old themes of this special season in the lives of Christians as we expectantly await the celebration of Christ's birth.  The 1946 movie is an enduring favorite because it tells a story of despair and hope we can all relate to. Advent tells that same story, with laughter, tears, and memorable characters. With the film as a vehicle, we can experience God's good news in a fresh way, remembering that Christ overcomes the despair of the world.

CenterPeace December Special Events

During the season of Advent, we will feature special events on Wednesday nights during CenterPeace, all family-oriented and unique.  Dinner will be at 6:00 p.m. as always ($5.00 per person, $15 max for families), with festivities starting at 6:30 p.m. on December 3rd, 10th, and 17th.  All of these events are great opportunities to invite neighbors and friends to celebrate the season.

This coming Wednesday we will host our traditional Hanging of the Greens with a twist.  We will have a short liturgy that celebrates the significance of decorations we use in our worship space, then families will decorate our Chrismon tree, but in the background during the decorating, we'll also be playing the Veggie Tales' "It's a Meaningful Life" (to coincide with our Advent worship series based on Jimmy Stewart's "It's a Wonderful Life").  There will be make-it-yourself craft projects as well.  It's a going to be a fun, casual evening.

On December 10th we will host our Instant Christmas Pageant, "Bethlehem Bound" at 6:30 p.m.  In one night, families will create props, rehearse, and present a simple Christmas production.  This fun event has four scenes that involve everyone, young and old alike, and has a captivating and original script.  No memorization necessary.  Bethlehem Bound is full of entertaining drama and humor, original music, and a poignant message.

Christmas Under the Stars.  Join us on Wednesday, December 17th for an evening of celebrating the Christmas story the way that hundreds of generations celebrated it before the days of cable TV and Facebook updates: unplugged and under the stars, around the campfire with the tinge of the cool, evening air.  We'll meet out back around the fire pit overlooking the lake for acoustic carols, scripture, dramatic monologues from some of the familiar characters of the Christmas story, communion, and hot cider and s'mores!

Kids' Day Out - November 28th

UMW Program and Luncheon - December 6

Make plans to attend our United Methodist Women Christmas Luncheon and Program on Saturday, December 6th at 11:45 a.m.  Our  theme is "A Time Traveler Tale." Sharee Schaefer will walk us through a book projected on the big screens with Christmas Carols throughout the story.  All women of Peace are invited to join us.  Please bring your favorite covered dish to share.

UMW is a group of women organized for mission and participation in the global ministries of the church.  Several small groups (or "circles") of UMW meet each month. Church-wide unit meetings are held at various times throughout the year for fellowship and study.  Come discover all the ways you can grow, connect, serve and develop lasting friendships at Peace!

Gift Share Event - December 14

Do you have NEW or GENTLEY USED items that you would like to give away for someone to use as Christmas gifts? Then this event is for you!  Peace is sponsoring a day of sharing where folks can bring in items and others may take them to give to their families and friends (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle).

On Sunday, December, 14, simply bring in gifts to donate and place them on the tables located on the church portico. Everyone is then welcome to "shop" in between worship services. This is re-gifting with a purpose, Christmas not focused on money, but only open hearts. If we have any left over gifts, you may take them home, or they will be donated to local charities. Questions?  Contact the church office 407-438-8947.

Christmas Poinsettia Order Deadline - December 17

If you would like to place a Christmas Poinsettia in the sanctuary in honor or in memory of a loved one, please fill out the form in the sanctuary and turn it in with your offering or to the church office.  All plants must be ordered no later than Wednesday, December 17 to ensure delivery. The cost is only $10.00 per poinsettia.  Please make checks payable to Peace Church.  Don't forget to pick up your plant after services on Christmas Eve! For more information contact the Church Office 407-438-8947 or [email protected]

Use Your Time to Help Make Ministry Happen

Part of the process of serving God faithfully is using our time and talents to help make ministry happen.  There are many great ministry teams here at Peace who do important work each week, and we are ALWAYS in need of new people to help sustain these teams and bring fresh energy and perspective.  People are often intimidated by making a commitment, but we have multiple opportunities to serve on team rotations that require a once-a-month obligation that can make a major difference to a team's success (and provide a GREAT way for you to build relationships with fellow team-members).

Needs Right Now We need monthly help

* Supervising in The Studio during Kids Worship at 9:30 (helping keep kids focused and safe for half-an-hour)

* Tech Booth Operators (for media, lighting, and sound during worship)

* Coffee Hospitality (half an hour to make coffee on Sundays)

* Hospitality Team (greeters and ushers).

Children's Ministry News

Child volunteers are needed to help with the Children's Christmas Eve Worship service on Wednesday, December 24th at 5:00 p.m.  If your child would like to participate in the service, which may involve reading, or handling a prop that pertains to the service, please contact Julie Chatfield.  This is a great experience for the kids that gives them the opportunity to share the message of Christmas.  ([email protected] or 321-689-6899)

Peace Angel Tree Coming in December

Once again during the next few weeks we will be collecting gift cards from those who wish to help families who need an extra hand during the Christmas season.  If you would like to help, please donate small denomination gift cards (as many as you like!) from local retailers such as Wal-Mart, Target, and Publix.  We will distribute them to families who are part of our congregation or recipients of our Meals Assistance Program according to need.  We have moved to gift cards (rather than actual gifts) in the past couple of years because we believe they give families a sense of dignity (and practicality) in that families can address their own most pressing needs.

Remember that if you use one of our gift card donation envelopes and record your personal info as you submit your cards, we can issue a donation letter that you may use for tax purposes.

45s Church Exchange Event

As part of our expanding Peace vision to connect with our community and the world, the 45s ministry is participating in a church exchange with our friends in Christ at St. Michael's Methodist Church Nassau, the Bahamas in June 2015 (you'll remember Pastor Philip Stubbs and crew were just here with us a few weeks ago).  This is a bold initiative undertaken by our Children's Ministry to engage elementary school students and their families in connectional ministry.  During our visit, we will establish relationships with the kids of St. Michaels by attending their school for a day and participate in one of their Youth meetings.  We will also be stretching our "mission vision" by bringing the joy of Jesus to the 60-80 children living in an orphanage and those children destined to live their days abandoned on the children's ward of the government hospital.  After Pastor Stubbs and his outreach coordinators met with our 45s group, answering dozens of their questions, they were SUPER excited about the opportunity he provided.  However, we will need extra help in bringing this vision to fruition.

The expense of the trip is $500 per person (+ passport fees) and each child must be accompanied by their parent, so the minimum cost for a family is $1000 and some families have multiple children in the 45's ministry.  We have a total of 21 people committed to attending this church exchange but some of them need financial assistance to make this happen.  We are helping families develop strategies for personal fund raising and hosting some general fund raisers (specifically designed not to conflict with youth mission trip efforts), but if you  feel led to help sponsor one of our children, our most immediate need is to secure airfare ($350 per child) by December 30th, 2014.  If you would like to invest in the work these families will be doing on behalf of Peace, just mark your donation (any amount welcome) "45s Mission Trip".

Please be in prayer for this trip:  for those we will encounter, for those participating in the trip, for safety, for health, for the local missions work we will be doing in the months ahead in preparation, and for us to stay true to God's vision.  Feel free to email or call with questions. Heidi Hoopingarner--Leader of the 45's ministry [email protected] or 407-493-7080.
