Excellence Awards Spotlight: Collaboration, Board Governance and Small Nonprofit Finalists

Each week leading up to Nonprofit Awareness Day we'll be highlighting Nonprofit Excellence Award finalists across the eight categories (If you didn't have the chance to read about the Advocacy and Young Professional finalists click here). The finalists below are an impressive group; differing in size, mission and location, they're all making waves in the sector.

Collaboration:Collective Impact

While an organization on its own can undoubtedly bring about significant change, when organizations come together, their reach and influence grow tremendously. This is seen through the work of the Big Sister Association of Greater Boston, which has developed a unique collaboration that leverages the Boston Housing Authority's community relationships to match girls in the city's housing developments with mentors, as well as engages Blue Cross Blue Shield volunteers during their annual community service day to improve the housing developments where the girls served by Big Sister live. Also driven by a passion for serving youth, the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation applies a team mentality when collaborating with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston to decrease drowning among inner city youth by teaching the young members how to swim. Serving an entirely different population, the Mystic Valley Elder Services assists more than 15,000 elderly individuals through its Senior Nutrition Outreach Program, in a collaboration with community food pantries to provide free groceries to older adults and adults living with disabilities.

Click here to continue learning about this year's finalists for the Board Governance:Setting the Course Award who illustrate how effective board leadership can transform an organization and the Small Nonprofit: Doing More with Less Award whose small budgets and staff don't hold the following organizations back but serve as badge of honor.

Don't forget to register for Nonprofit Awareness Day on June 8 at the State House, presented by Citizens Bank, when we'll celebrate all 32 finalists and announce the winners in each category.

Nonprofits Slow to Add Women to Leadership

According to The Boston Club's 2015 Census, the Commonwealth has made little progress in adding women to board and chief executive positions of major nonprofits over the last two years. The analysis of the state's top 150 nonprofits, determined by revenue, showed only a 1 percent increase in women board members in two years. Read more

The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) has issued a proposed Accounting Standards Update (ASU) entitled Not-for-Profit Entities (Topic 958) and Health Care Entities (Topic 954): Presentation of Financial Statements of Not-for-Profit Entities.  The proposed ASU is intended to improve the financial reporting of nonprofits and to provide more information to donors, creditors, grantors and others institutions. Potential changes could impact reporting, disclosure and presentation of finances. You are encouraged to submit feedback on the plan by August 20, 2015. You can learn more on AAF CPA's blog.
