AT&T Grant Award Supports
At-Risk Youth

The Foundation for SCPS is proud to announce a $25,000 award from AT&T to benefit at-risk students. This award will allow The Foundation and AT&T to collaboratively support two alternative high school programs, Alternative Programs for Youth and Young Men of Excellence. "Our future is dependent on the success of our children and their accomplishments are based on their exposure to innovative educational opportunities," said Troy McNichols, Regional Director AT&T Florida. "AT&T feels that these two programs are instrumental in insuring that students in SCPS receive an additional opportunity to get the education they need to be successful."

Staff Gives One for the Kids!

Staff giving makes a major statement when we go out into the community to ask for donor support.  And boy did our employees make a strong statement!  We are in the home stretch of the employee giving phase, and $102,400 has been pledged so far by SCPS employees this year.  Thank you!

Employee Donor Spotlight

Many know Brian Sackett as a veteran 5th grade teacher at Woodlands Elementary, some know him as Longwood City Commissioner, but at the Foundation he is known as a pace setter for civic responsibility.

Brian shared, "My wife and I came from large families yet somehow didn't feel that we were not well off.  Our childhoods were good and we were expected to do well in school, as that is where our opportunities would lie. We want that opportunity available for our children, grandchildren and all children of Seminole County, so we support the Foundation."

Thank you for setting the pace, Brian, as a long-time major donor of the Foundation.

Bank of America Award Supports Transition Students
Paul Rubino, Bank of America VP, and Paul Cipparone, Foundation Board Chair-elect.
Thanks to Bank of America for funding the SCPS Transition Program with a grant award of $5,000!  In the Transition Program, students who enter 9th grade with low test scores are considered at-risk for dropping out and qualify for the program. Students attend summer school for a head start on their freshman courses and develop relationships with faculty and staff to promote a smooth transition to high school. With Bank of America's donation, 600 students received critical support services this past summer, including general mental health, drug and alcohol education/suppression, healthy lifestyle coaching, and the delivery of organizational strategies. Thank you Bank of America for supporting our students!

Let's Read, Seminole Promotes Summer Reading

The 'Summer Slide' isn't a fun vacation game.  It actually refers to the learning losses that many students experience during the summer months, which ultimately lead to reading achievement gaps.

Let's Read, Seminole is a motivational summer reading program dedicated to opening new worlds for students and making reading fun and exciting, so they will want to practice their skills. The program is in need of additional funding for reading reinforcement materials, incentives, and opportunities to focus on reading.

Click here to donate - just select Enhancing Student Performance and then Let's Read Seminole!  For more teacher, parent or student information about the summer reading program, click here.
