Changes in the UMass System

We have a new president, a new dean, and shortly we'll have a new future, as envisioned by the strategic planning process now under way.

All of us at Commonwealth Compact cheered the selection of Marty Meehan as the next president of the University of Massachusetts System because of his universally recognized accomplishments as chancellor of UMass Lowell, and specifically because, under his leadership, UMass Lowell embraced the Compact and became one of our strongest partners in higher education. Meehan is committed to diversity, and transformed his campus into one that now reflects the region's population far more than it did when he arrived. We look forward to dynamic leadership from President Meehan.

In the meantime, David Cash has been named dean of the McCormack Graduate School of Policy and Global Studies, succeeding Ira Jackson. Cash has been commissioner of the state Department of Environmental Protection. He is a Harvard PhD and an expert on climate change. In interviews, he stressed that the diversity of the UMass Boston campus is one of the most appealing qualities that drew him to the job. We look forward to talking with Dean Cash in coming weeks. Meanwhile, Ira will stay on campus as a vice provost, and potentially a Compact partner again. We are grateful to him for his collegiality and wise counsel.

Progress in the making...

Meanwhile, the three-person team from the Executive Service Corps is actively conducting interviews to provide a foundation for the strategic planning that should give perspective to our mission, our staffing and our financial sustainability. The team is working with Velda, Georgianna, and Bob to develop a meaningful agenda for a retreat scheduled for June 22. Thanks to all who have agreed to be interviewed, and otherwise helped along the way.

We are making good strides in engaging new individuals and employers to the Talent Network.  Our talent membership is up by 10% this month. We want to welcome Rockland Trust to our community.

Congratulations to The Boston Foundation
On Wednesday evening, May 27th, The Boston Foundation honored " There at the Beginning grantees," and we were one of them. The reception included a delightful ambiance of community, speakers, precious remembrances, and passion for the work that has been done over the years. Their contributions to assist poor immigrants and laborers from the World War I and II eras to present day nonprofits have made a powerful impact on the City of Boston and the region. The Boston Foundation has set the bar high and has become a leader in philanthropic initiatives. We want to congratulate The Boston Foundation on their 100 th birthday!  100 great ideas and new nonprofits
New Collaborations Facilitating Change
We are close to adding Western Massachusetts representation to our Commonwealth Compact Advisory Council. More to come in the near future.

And we are collaborating with the Affinity Leadership Consortium (NABA, NBMBA, NSHMBA, NAAAP, SHPE, NSBE, ALPFA, YWCA, and HACC) for events on three successive Saturdays - June 13, 20 and 27. It's called Moving Forward:  Tools for Success, a professional development program for candidates to engage with employers.

We have also had ongoing discussions with New England Blacks in Philanthropy (NEBiP) to close the gap in understanding that Blacks are donors that should be taken seriously. NEBiP's "mission is to inform, reform and transform philanthropic giving in the Black community. We embarked on an evidence-based approach to understanding the motivations, desires and patterns of Black philanthropy." (New England Blacks in Philanthropy)  Based on recent research by NEBiP, they give a new perspective on Black stewardship in Boston.
