Hype Over Census Bureau STEM Report is Overblown

The United States' shortage of scientific workers used to be undisputed. Graduates with scientific training are employed at a substantially higher rate than the national average. They're also harder to find: Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) job openings take twice as long to fill as other ones. But these statistics have been called into question. A recent Census Bureau study found that only a quarter of bachelor's degree graduates in STEM fields end up working in those fields...Not so fast. Let's start with the flaws in the survey.

The millions have proved no match for the moms.

Supporters of the Common Core academic standards have spent big this past year to persuade wavering state legislators to stick with the new guidelines for math and language arts instruction. Given the firestorm of opposition that took them by surprise, they consider it a victory that just five states, so far, have taken steps to back out.

Race to the Top Is Five Years Old, But Did It Actually Improve Student Achievement?

Race to the Top just had its fifth birthday and almost all of the $4 billion in federal cash states were awarded under the programs has been spent. 

So did the program actually move the needle on student achievement? Did the money make a difference in states that had it and states that didn't? We'll know all those answers...eventually.

By 2020, President Barack Obama wants the United States to regain its position as the country with the most educated residents. But in the last 20 years, nearly one in every 10 Americans started a college career that they never finished. They may help account for the gap between the U.S. and the most educated members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Looming Computer Science Employee Deficit Worries Academics

The US Department of Labor has projected that by 2020  there will be 1.4 million  computer science (CS) jobs available.  The trouble is that there will only be enough graduates to fill 30% of these jobs.

Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education is a leading priority among the investments required in FY'16 to support Research and Development (R&D) that Obama Administration officials say, "... is essential to address [the nation's] societal needs."  

 

CFC, Red Sox Foundation, CASIS, and ISS Raffle 

The Boston Red Sox Foundation today announced a truly out of this world collaborative partnership with the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS), the manager of the International Space Station (ISS) U.S. National Laboratory. As part of an initial Partnership with the Red Sox Foundation CASIS will add its support of the ongoing World Series Ring Raffle by adding a once-in-a-lifetime, VIP trip to NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX. Last summer, Dr. Victoria Zhong started noticing that her two-year-old daughter, Lizzie, was becoming an enthusiastic user of several devices in our home, such as the smartphone, iPad, and desktop computer. As a former educator who has a PhD in education, she understand the importance of encouraging students to pursue their interests. Particularly, she had passionately encouraged children to take an interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).

Wayne Carley understands that the future of the American economy rests on the success of our STEM education efforts in schools across the nation. To help promote STEM education, he has created a monthly magazine focused on issues related to STEM.
