Making plans for summer 2014?

Please invite your student to consider attending classes at UNT. Summer session offers many advantages over regular long semesters:
  • Staying on track for an early or on-time graduation
  • Catching up if a student dropped or did not pass a class during fall or spring semesters
  • Completing pre-requisites for fall classes
  • Attending smaller classes with more one-on-one interaction with professors
  • Taking unique classes that are only offered at this time of year
  • Avoiding tuition and fee increases in future semesters
  • Participating in study abroad, internships, and fun student activities

Students should consult with their advisor or follow the registrar's webpage for more information about summer course offerings and registration deadlines.

Parent Association Scholarships

The UNT Parent Association awards scholarships in the spring semester each academic year. Two different types of scholarships are awarded-the Scholastic Scholarship and the Draw, or External Scholarship. The number of scholarships given in each category depends on the availability of funds with a minimum of five $500 scholarships awarded in the Draw category. For each recipient, the amount awarded is split evenly between the following fall and spring semesters. The scholarships are given to an undergraduate or graduate student who has attended one full semester at UNT. Summer sessions are not considered full semesters. Students may re-apply for the scholarships annually and students can receive a Parent Association scholarship multiple times during their collegiate experience at UNT. The student may submit an application for both or just one as long as the requirements listed below are met.

The deadline for the Parent Association "Draw" Scholarship is April 1, 2014. Click Here to download the scholarship application.

The Parent Association Scholastic Scholarship application should be submitted via the Student Financial Aid and Scholarships office. The recipients of this scholarship are selected by the university scholarship committee. The deadline for this application is March 1. See "Free Money?" below for more information on the UNT General Scholarship.

Free money?

Soon your student will begin getting advised and registering for their summer and fall classes. This is no reason to go into panic mode regarding finances or paying for your student's education, or someone having to get a second or third job. UNT awards more than $320 million annually in financial aid and scholarships, and it is likely that your student is eligible to receive aid.

There are two very simple ways to get financial assistance at UNT. The first is to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 15. The FAFSA provides more than $150 billion in grants, loans, and work-study funds to students each year, but you must complete the form to see what you qualify for. You should NEVER pay anything to receive assistance with the FAFSA, or to submit it. Only use the secure FAFSA website, https://fafsa.ed.gov/. For general information on Federal Student Aid, visit the Department of Education's official website, http://studentaid.ed.gov/fafsa. This site explains myths about financial aid, why/when you should fill out the FAFSA, the different types of aid (grants, loans, work-study, aid for military families, etc.), and much, much more. While your student may have already filled out the FAFSA last year, it does need to be updated and re-submitted every year, and the amount of aid you may be eligible to receive could change.

The second way to receive financial aid from UNT is to fill out the general scholarship application. The Student Financial Aid and Scholarships (SFAS) office oversees a range of scholarships that are university and donor funded. The General Scholarship Application (student must log in) deadline is March 1 and the student should be prepared to provide essays, email contact for individuals providing letters of recommendation, and possibly other documents. For more information on UNT Scholarships visit the scholarships website.

DLS Presents: Lt. Dan Choi

Lt. Dan Choi, a West Point graduate and Iraq veteran - one of only eight students in his graduating class fluent in Arabic - announced that he was  gay on 'The Rachel Maddow Show' on March 19, 2009. Because of three words - "I am gay"- Lt. Choi's life changed forever. Despite his extreme value as an Arabic speaker able to communicate quickly and clearly with the Iraqi people, one month after his announcement Lt. Dan Choi was notified that the Army had begun discharge proceedings against him. After protests, petitions, and hard work, Lt. Choi fought for the eventual repeal of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell.' Lt. Choi continues to advocate for full LGBT civil rights and veteran's health. He has served as Grand Marshal of the San Francisco, New York City, Miami, and Wichita Kansas LGBT Pride parades, as well as the Amsterdam Canal Pride in the Netherlands, and the illegal Moscow Russia Pride Parade where Lt. Choi and several Russians were beaten by neo nazis and secret police.

Students are eligible for one free ticket and up to four guest tickets at $5 each. Visit the DLS website for more information or to purchase tickets. Please note the location is changing and the lecture will now be held in the Gateway Center.
