HEROs Donates $10,000

A $10,000 generous donation has been awarded by HEROs (Harrah's Employee Reach Out - an employee directed organization) whose goal is to reach out to families, children, and individuals throughout through River Cities United Way to improve the well being of our tri-state communities. This gift is providing much needed access to basic needs, legal, financial and educational assistance.

Kingman Impact Story

A woman and her new born baby were referred to Kingman Aid to Abused People (KAAP) by Arizona Child Protective Services (CPS) local agency.  The family was involved with CPS due to a prior incident in which she was pregnant and her oldest child, a one year old was removed and placed in foster care following a domestic violence incident with the children's father.  The perpetrator was charged and convicted for the crime and currently serving time in prison.  CPS had encouraged the family to enter the KAAP shelter and support program in effort to provide safety, to be educated to the effects that domestic violence has on children and to have a collaboration of agencies assisting the family in becoming self-sufficient.

During the client's 120 day stay in the KAAP shelter, the family was provided shelter, food, diapers, clothing, transportation and emergency financial assistance, KAAP's Clinical Coordinator assessed the client's emotional health, provided resources to mental health services and offered and provided one-on-one advocacy as needed for support.  The client attended in-house support/education groups which focus on domestic violence education, boundaries, parenting, safety planning and self-esteem building.  The client was described as a sponge, as she was absorbing and actively demonstrating in verbal communication and behavior that she was gaining a wealth of knowledge on how to care for and provide a safe, healthy environment for herself and children.  The KAAP Clinical Coordinator assisted in and attended Child and Family Team meetings held by CPS, as well as, advocating for visitation with the toddler while residing in the shelter.  The visitations were granted and the toddler spent weekends with his family under the supervision of the shelter staff.

Child Protective Services awarded reunification of the toddler back to the client the week of Christmas following the successful completion of KAAP's program, recognition of her accomplishments meeting short and long term goals and growth of knowledge in providing a healthy environment for her and her children.
