He will be updating us on Arctic strategy and activities. We will then be in Stamford for the Connecticut Maritime Association's annual shipping conference from March 23-25th. Come visit us in our booth!! April has three exciting events: April 16th we will be in Norfolk discussing a port and ship intersection: port waste reception facilities. April 20th we will be observing the 5th anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon event in New Orleans, and April 21-22nd we will be in Miami for an Environmental Challenges for Ships. Also mark your calendars for our annual National Maritime Day observance on May 21st in Washington DC followed by the AMVER Awards Dinner! In addition, our list of strategic partners grows! We are now aligned with Green Marine, and have signed an MOU with the United States Power Squadrons and have one waiting in the wings with Ocean Conservancy. On top of all this, our community outreach programs are growing, and more students are being trained in the effects of marine debris-and learning about the maritime industry at the same time! Our next Marine Environment Learning Guide is close to printing, and we will have our 2014 Annual Report sent to you soon! All in all, NAMEPA is starting the year with a bang!! An environmentally secure one of course!!! Happy 2015! Carleen

NAMEPA and USPS Sign MOU

to Jointly Promote
Marine Environmental Stewardship

North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the United States Power Squadrons (USPS). The idea to join in collaboration began over a year ago. On Saturday, January 24, 2015 at the USPS AGM the document was signed by Carleen Lyden-Kluss, Co-Founder and Executive Director for NAMEPA and Chief Commander Robert Baldridge, SN for the USPS. Both USPS and NAMEPA have a mutual interest in establishing a cooperative arrangement to jointly work together to promote beneficial contributions to education supporting aquatic and marine environmental stewardship. USPS has been actively engaged in the education of its members in a wide variety of boating and nautical subjects since its establishment in 1914. It promotes environmental stewardship in the aquatic environment including Best Management Environmental Practices for recreational boaters. NAMEPA is dedicated to "Save Our Seas" is an independent marine industry led non-profit that advocates sound practices and educates seafarers, port communities, students and the general public about the marine environment through programs that provide a sound base of knowledge and call to action to protect the Earth's most important global resource and its inhabitants. This collaboration will exponentially increase the distribution of educational materials developed by NAMEPA and its partners and expand the outreach to the general public throughout North America. This partnership is already working on several events for 2015. Be sure to stay in touch through social media about upcoming events on industry and public education on the marine environment.

Students in grades K-12 are invited to participate in a North American art contest sponsored by the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA), the U.S. Coast Guard, and Sea Research Foundation. The theme of the contest is "Discover the Marine Industry." More than 90% of the world's goods are transported by ships. In fact, ships are truly the "engines of globalization". Transporting goods by sea is more environmentally friendly than moving goods the same distance by air or over land and help keep the cost of goods and energy low. Students are asked to find a creative way to answer the following question: "How does the marine industry affect your everyday life?" The term "marine" refers to oceans, waterways and organisms that call these places home. "Industry" is what enables products we use every day to be transported all over the world. Twelve entries (six from grades K-5 and six from grades 6-12) will be selected as finalists by March 31, 2015. Winners will be required to submit their original artwork upon being notified of their selection as finalists. The winning artwork will be featured on the NAMEPA, U.S. Coast Guard, and Sea Research Foundation websites. Finalists will receive a certificate and a calendar with the artwork from all 12 winners. Two grand-prize winning artists (one from each of the grade brackets) will be selected and will receive, in addition to the certificate and calendar, a $100 cash prize and a U.S. Coast Guard prize package. For more details about the contest and to learn more about the marine industry, visit www.namepa.net/art-contest. If you have additional questions about the contest, please contact  [email protected].
Who: Students in grades K-12
What: Each entry must be a two-dimensional, original piece of artwork done on white poster board with dimensions of 28 in. x 22 in. (71 cm. x 56 cm.). Any art medium may be used; however, computer graphics will not be accepted. Pale colors should not be used because they are too difficult to reprint. Any artwork that includes copyrighted or trademarked product names will be disqualified.
When: All entries must be uploaded by March 1, 2015.
How: You must take a high-resolution (at least 3072 x 2304 pixels) digital photograph of your poster in order to submit your entry. You or your teacher/facilitator must then upload the digital photo of your poster along with your name, grade, school/after-school program name, school/after-school program address, and teacher/facilitator's name, phone number,
and e-mail address via the submission form at www.marineartcontest.submittable.com/submit
