"I basically believe we are God's creation, made in God's image and likeness. So much of the trouble of the world is caused by fear, hurt and ignorance. If we trust in humanity, if we teach, help and reconcile each other, then we can love one another into life."

La Crosse, Wisconsin Mayor declares March 30 "Sister Thea Bowman Day.
Thea's close friend, School Sister of Notre Dame Addie Walker, sums up Thea's gift: She was "a black woman of faith who lived it with great freedom and integrity, and not without cost." She was God's child, says Walker, and thus was free to follow a different path. "Many of us try to meet with other people's expectations; try to live what other people expect. ... She didn't live with that."
"In my words," says Walker, "her teaching style was always to forsake the process and save the people." That legacy still lives, she says, because "people taught by her are still affected by her. Her teaching still burns within them ... I think her impact will be long-lived because she was an embodiment of love. She affirmed the very being of persons."
