Attention New Jersey Residents!  Please Help EFNJ With Its Statewide Survey

This summer, the Epilepsy Foundation of NJ is working on a project which focuses on gathering information about adults with epilepsy in New Jersey. We are interested in learning about how treatment of epilepsy might affect the quality of life in individuals ages 18 and up with epilepsy. Involvement in the project involves filling out a brief and simple 10-15 minute Epilepsy Survey. (If interested, please click on the Epilepsy Survey. Please scan and email the completed survey to [email protected] or fax to 609.392.5621) Survey results will help us pinpoint how a person's quality of life is affected by epilepsy and what other resources we can potentially offer to make life easier for people living with epilepsy. We thank you for your time and participation!

Gov. Christie on Thursday signed into law S2353 extending the term of the NJ Epilepsy Task Force by one year and adding an additional member from the NJ Association of School Nurses.

The bill was introduced last November as the term of the existing task force was expiring. Sen. Fred Madden and Sen. Diane Allen and Assemblyman Herb Conaway Jr. were Primary Sponsors with Assemblywomen Dawn Addiego and Shavonda Sumter were co-sponsors.

The bill passed the State Senate 37-0 and the State Assembly 75-0.

Get the FREE seizure-management training you need, online or in person

    Earn 3.2 continuing education units

Learn how to teach others to support students with epilepsy

As a school nurse, you're often a first responder when it comes to managing a seizure in school. More than 315,000 American students have epilepsy, and another 45,000 are diagnosed each year. It's almost certain at least one student in your school has epilepsy. Are you ready to manage that student's in-school care...and react when he or she has a seizure?

To help you prepare, the Epilepsy Foundation has created Managing Students with Seizures: A Training for School Nurses. This training for school nurses is available for FREE, either online or in a classroom setting through our Foundation affiliate network. When you complete the 3-hour course, you'll earn 3.2 continuing education units. You'll also receive a Quick Reference Guide and a Seizure Training for School Personnel toolkit.

The Managing Students with Seizures course is designed to give you information, strategies and resources to better manage students with seizures. Divided into three 1-hour sections, the program will train you to:

    *

RECOGNIZE seizure activity and its impact on students

    *

ENSURE appropriate seizure first aid is given while minimizing stigma

    *

UNDERSTAND current treatment options and their side effects

    *

COORDINATE ongoing treatment with the student, parents, the school and the health care team

    *

TRAIN teachers and other personnel to recognize and manage seizures

    *

CREATE an environment in which the student continues to achieve educational goals
