Thursday, January 2
Happy New Year! The World Affairs Councils of America's National Office is excited to kick off 2014 by announcing our newest program:

Cover to Cover is a monthly conference call featuring the most influential authors on subjects of national and international importance. Over the next six months in particular, our aim is to convene authors on the Six Top Issues for 2014 that we addressed in our National Conference in November.

WACA's Cover to Cover is a national program offered as a benefit to all current WACA Member Councils. The monthly conference calls will be opportunities for you and your Council members and supporters to learn more about critical topics, as well as discover and engage with esteemed authors that you may wish to invite to your Councils. In short, we cover a topic with an expert so that you may cover the same, in even greater depth, spearheading a national conversation.

Be sure to register, read up, ask questions, and enjoy!
-- Bill Clifford, WACA President & CEO

This month, Cover to Cover presents Peter W. Singer, Senior Fellow and Director, Center for 21st Century Security and Intelligence, Brookings Institution, and author of Cybersecurity and Cyberwar: What Everyone Needs to Know on Wednesday, January 8 at 2:00 PM ET. The call with be moderated by Bill Clifford.

To register, please respond to this email or write Ian J. Byrne at [email protected] to receive call-in information.

Cybersecurity and Cyberwar (Oxford University Press) will be released on January 3. Structured around answering the key questions we all face in the cyber age (how it all works, why it all matters, and what can we do?), the book is "an essential read," according to Google Chairman Eric Schmidt. Admiral John Stavridis, former Supreme Allied Commander at NATO, praises the "most approachable and readable book ever written on the cyber world" for having "distilled the key facts and policy, provided sensible recommendations, and opened the debate generally to any informed citizen: a singular achievement."

Peter W. Singer is the director of the Center for 21st Century Security and Intelligence and a senior fellow in the Foreign Policy program at Brookings Institution. His research focuses on three core issues: current U.S. defense needs and future priorities; the future of war; and the future of the U.S. defense system. Singer lectures frequently to U.S. military audiences and is the author of several books and articles, including Wired for War: The Robotics Revolution and Conflict in the 21st Century.

Singer is the youngest scholar named senior fellow in Brookings's nearly 100-year history. He has been named by CNN to their "New Guard" list of the next generation of newsmakers, by the Smithsonian Institution-National Portrait Gallery as one of the 100 "leading innovators in the nation," and by Foreign Policy magazine to their "Top 100 Global Thinkers List," the people whose ideas most influenced the world. Full Bio

Upcoming speaking engagements include the World Affairs Council of Oregon (January 16) and the World Affairs Council of Naples (April 7). Peter Singer is keen to visit more Councils; please contact the WACA National Office if you would like to be introduced to his agent.
