Father Demetri's Message

"Come all of you: enter into the Joy of your Lord.

You the first and you the last, Receive alike your reward;

You rich and you poor, dance together;

You sober and you weaklings, celebrate the day;

You who have kept the fast and you who have not, rejoice today. The table is richly laden: enjoy the Royal Banquet."

Pascha 2015

Dear Parish Family Member and Online Visitor,

The excerpts above are part of the beautiful Pascha homily of St. John Chrysostom which we will all hear at the Service of the Resurrection.  Each Great and Holy Week provides an opportunity to experience the Passion, Crucifixion and Death of our Lord Jesus Christ.  With each service we draw closer to the culmination of Great and Holy Week which is the Resurrection of Christ on Pascha.

Yet, there are many things that will happen in the life of our parish family this week in which we invite everyone to participate. [Continue reading letter]

God Bless,

STEWARDSHIP
At the recent Lenten retreat, "Blessed Are Those Who Hear," Father Maximos of Mt. Athos spoke on prayer and the Mother of God. Tying-in with the period, he talked about the Akathist Hymn and the repeated reference to the Theotokos as our light. "She is our light, shining to those in darkness." And although we don't see Him, "God is hidden within the Mother of God, it's part of the mystery of her being." While it is a tremendous injustice to shorten Father Maximos' valuable lessons and words, he reminded everyone that she also is the one who is always listening: listening to God, to Jesus Christ, to us... For us, "We must learn that prayer is also about listening. A deeper part of prayer is listening to God, not always us doing all the talking." "Try to get to a place of silence and open yourself to love. To be with God, open ourselves and try to discern what God is trying to tell us."

CHURCH SCHOOL

We would like to thank all students, parents and volunteers in advance for participating and helping with the Holy Friday retreat! Our students will be taking part in activities, a discussion, and decorating the Kouvouklion.

We also have the upcoming annual Oratorical Festival on April 19th, chaired by Niko Saledas. Thank you, Niko!

Please mark your calendars for graduation on June 7th. Stay tuned for details!

GREEK SCHOOL

Kalo mina! Now that April has arrived, we will start seeing more signs of spring. The days are already longer and the snow is slowly disappearing. This is a busy month as we prepare to celebrate Holy Pascha. On April 11 we will not have any Greek School classes because of Holy Saturday. Also on April 18, Spring Vacation begins so classes will not meet. Greek school will resume on April 25.

On Sunday, March 29, the  Greek School celebrated Greek Independence Day and the Feast Day of the Annunciation. As always, the children did a wonderful job reciting poems, reading biographies, and singing patriotic songs. The dancers were also great. We are very proud of all our Greek School students. We would also like to thank all the parents that contributed for the coffee hour.

On April 26, we hope that many of you will join Saint Nicholas and march in the Independence Day Parade.

We wish all of you Kali Anastasi and hope you enjoy Easter with your family and friends.

Kalo Pascha!

GOYA

The GOYA will be participating in the Holy Friday retreat where we will help decorate the Kouvouklion and participate in a discussion. We are planning an activity for May: most likely a spring hike, or a trip to Canobie. Stay tuned!

If you would like to receive emails about GOYA activities, please email Leto ( letodp@gmail.com)
ST. IRENE'S PHILOPTOCHOS

Thank you to all who have sent in their stewardship for 2015.  I will be submitting names at the end of April.  If you have not already submitted your stewardship, please do so soon.  To date, we have 57 paid members.  Last year we had 75 by the end of the year.  Can we top that?

Our March commitments to National were to OCMC (Orthodox Christian Mission Center), to which we sent $150, and to the Hellenic College Holy Cross Lenten event, to which, with your generosity, we sent $300.

Our April commitments will be $50 to the Sisterhood of Saint Basil Academy, and $200 to IOCC (International Orthodox Christian Charities).We also decided to send and additional $100 to OCMC (not a commitment), in answer to their appeal, to help grow the church in Alaska.  For Presvytera Katherine Baker, we will send $500.

Please remember our Chapter Challenge Project of feeding the hungry.  A large lined trash barrel is in the hall waiting for your donations!  As we have been asked to check the dates on all items, please make sure your donations do not have expired dates.  We had to discard several items.  Our next major collection date is May 3.

Upcoming events:

  • St. Irene's will be hosting the fellowship hour on Palm Sunday.
  • Holy Thursday morning, we will be wrapping the eggs for Pascha. Many hands make light work, so please join us!
  • Holy Friday we will be decorating the Kouvouklion. Again, many hands are needed to finish this task in time for the service in the afternoon.

 Hope to see many of you during Holy Week, and then at our Next Meeting Tuesday,

April 14!
