Dear (Contact First Name),

I will be away Thursday through Sunday at a conference "Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment in the Common Core Era" presented by the California League of Schools. I am excited to bring back information about and more strategies for supporting your children's learning. I will give you a little report next week!

Happy Lent!

We were blessed this week by the music and prayer ministry of Jesse Manibusan, who led us in prayer and song on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. He also led evening sessions each of these days. He is an incredibly gifted and spiritual artist whose work is available on CD and online.

Many thanks to our Third Grade who did a wonderful job leading us through the Stations of the Cross last Friday. They were the first group this year, and their reading was phenomenal! Mr. Silva, our music teacher, and Mrs. Young, our parish accompanist, complemented the reading with their musical gifts. We will continue this special Lenten tradition this Friday at 11:00 AM with our Fifth Grade leading us. All are welcome to join us.

Your children are bringing home cardboard boxes for our annual Lenten collection for Operation Rice Bowl. Families are encouraged to make small sacrifices during this Lenten season and contribute to this important collection. Operation Rice Bowl is a project of Catholic Relief Services, which coordinates projects all over the world for people in need, including those in our own area. Last year, our parish donated over $2,000. You are invited to participate and make this Lenten season one of sharing with those in need. It is an important lesson for our young people.

Financial Assistance

All PSAS forms must be completed and postdated no later than March 4th.  Please be sure to include a $30 check with your application and all requested tax information.  Please mail your paperwork directly to the address provided on the back of the form.

Lillian Black Festival of the Arts

Congratulations to Jessica Moore, our wonderful Art teacher, and our talented students for a wonderful display at the Diocese of Oakland's Lillian Black Festival of the Arts. I was so proud to see such wonderful work by our students.

Social Media

We strive to educate our students on the power of social media, reminding them that what they post online is never private and can be very hurtful. This is an important reminder for adults as well. Please also remember that pictures of students other than your own child taken at a school event may not be posted online without permission from the parents of those students.

Moms Club

We would like to say a big thank you to our Moms Club for a wonderful daughter dance event and a very successful raffle.  The Moms Club donated $500 to our science classroom.  Thank you so much for your support!

Enrollment Task Force

Looking for a way to get more involved in long-range planning for St. Leander School? We are currently soliciting parents and parishioners to create an Enrollment Task Force. This purpose of this committee will be to create a plan for maintaining and building enrollment at St. Leander School. We ask that those who are interested be able to meet monthly to develop a plan and monitor implementation, and for one member of the committee to report to the School Board once per month. If you are interested, we have a detailed description of our goals for this committee in the office or you may contact Tim Chasteen, School Board President, at [email protected] for more information. We hope to have a committee of 6-8 to help with this important work.

Volunteer Opportunities

We are hosting Doughnut Sunday at the church after Masses on  March 15th.  We are still in need of volunteers from 7:30am-12:30pm.  Please contact Dan Lucero by email at [email protected] if you would like to sign up to volunteer.

One of our largest fundraisers of the year is coming soon!  We will need volunteers for our Pasta Dinner and Silent Auction event on April 18th.  The volunteer sign up sheet is provided in a link under the Pasta Dinner section of this newsletter listed below.

Special Persons Day is another opportunity to earn parent service hours.  That event will take place on May 1st.  Please save the date on your calendars.  More information will be available soon.

Candy Sale
We are extending our candy sale for two more weeks!  Anyone who would like to sell another box of candy can still come and pick one up at the school office.  To meet our fundraising goal, and sell all boxes of chocolate with our St. Leander printing on the front, we still need to sell 40 more boxes of chocolate.   If you have outstanding money, please send in all candy payments no later than Friday, March 6th.

                           The classroom before . . .

                       The classroom so far!

We expanded the size of the classroom by demolishing the closet and plan to replace that space with cabinets for storage and sinks. We have installed new flooring with electrical outlets, plumbing fixtures,  whiteboard, a new bulletin board and a fresh coat of paint.  We also upgraded our handrails to comply with accessibility requirements. We still need to complete the second phase of our project to purchase and install the cabinets and sinks along the back wall and purchase appropriate classroom furniture and supplies.

Please Help Us!
Pledge donations for one or two years are still an option
to help us reach our goal of completing our classroom! Please consider making a one-time donation or a pledge which can be paid by monthly check or charged to your credit card. Help us bring St. Leander School's Science Classroom into the future.
