TIFTON'S SCARY ACTIVITIES
There are enough Halloween-related activities around Tifton in the next few days to fill a haunted house! Among them, trick-or-treating, spooky stories and a costume contest during the final Saturday of the October Fall Frolics Oct. 26 at the Georgia Museum of Agriculture

and Historic Village at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.
The second annual A-Maze-ing Zombie Run starts the Ag Museum's day-long festivities at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Zombies will be spread throughout the course to hurry runners on their way.
Trick or Treat in the Historic Village will be Saturday from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Other activities there include the pumpkin patch, corn maze and face painting.
The activities at the Georgia Museum of Agriculture require an entrance fee. For information, call 229-391-5205.
Folks of all ages can also get into the Halloween spirit from noon-5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at Tifton Harley-Davidson, where its Rock the Lot Fall Festival and Costume Contest is being held. Cash prizes will be awarded for best adult and kids costumes as well as for best carved jack-o-lanterns. See the ad below within the Grapevine for more information.
ABAC student clubs and organizations are sponsoring a "Trunk-A-Treat" for children from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, in ABAC's north parking lot; students will be giving out candy and playing games with kids. Phi Theta Kappa will also hold Trick or Treat from 4-5 p.m.

Then on Halloween, Oct. 31, head downtown from 5 to 6 p.m. for the annual Downtown Halloween Safe Trick-or-Treat.
Downtown businesses have a tradition of welcoming hundreds of costumed children with treats, stickers, coupons and other Halloween goodies.
Children age 12 and under may bring their own goodie bag or the Tifton-Tift County Main Street Program, Tifton Police Academy and Tifton Police Department will provide a goodie bag to fill at participating businesses. Goodie bags and maps may be picked up at the information table located near Tifton Gardens and La Cabana Mexican Restaurant.
There will also be live entertainment on the Tifton Gardens stage.
Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
Downtown Halloween Safe Trick-or-Treat is sponsored by the Downtown Development Authority and the Tifton-Tift County Main Street Program. For information, call 229-391-3966.
Local law enforcement offers these safety tips for trick-or-treating:
* Never allow children to go trick-or-treating alone. A parent or a responsible adult should always accompany children ages 12 and under when they go out.
* Choose the houses you visit carefully. Only go to houses where the light is on and never enter a
 house for candy.
* Remind children to stay in well-lit areas; never take shortcuts and never go into isolated areas.
* Let your children know to tell you or a trusted adult if they see anything weird or unusual.
* Make sure their costumes are safe. Select outfits made of fire-retardant materials and trimmed inreflective tape. This allows drivers to easily spot children in the dark.
* Children and adults should carry a flashlight or glowstick so that motorists can see them.
* Children should walk on sidewalks or grass, not on the street.
* Children should cross the street at the corners. They should never cross the street between parked cars, in the middle of the block or diagonally across the intersection.
* Keep pets inside your home or in some other safe place on Halloween night.
* Teach children to bring treats home before eating them. Eat only factory-wrapped treats unless you know the giver.

CONGRESS TO TRY AGAIN NEXT WEEK

Following two years of struggles, a congressional conference committee is scheduled to begin work Wednesday on the farm bill, trying to salvage a compromise five-year plan. It won't be easy because of the differences between the House and Senate versions of the bill.
Congress hasn't passed a new farm bill since 2008. The current extension of that farm bill expired at the end of September, and the two congressional chambers continue to hash out whether to include the food stamp program in the next bill.
According to Politico.com, "A farm bill is about more than corn and cotton futures. Beyond the nation's vast croplands, it impacts the federal forests and millions of acres of prairie lands held in conservation. It is perhaps the single most important piece of legislation that addresses rural economic development. Its trade and food aid titles are a reminder of how important America's agricultural power can be overseas. Even the beleaguered honey bee has a stake in new research provisions."

 'LORD, WHY ME?' DOMESTIC VIOLENCE PLAY SATURDAY NIGHT AT TIFT THEATRE
A stage play by T.Y. Martin, Atlanta's four-time playwright of the year, is coming to the Tift Theatre at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26.
"Lord, Why Me?" deals with domestic violence; October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
A'maya Solomon, 13, of Tifton -- daughter of the Rev. L.C. Solomon and attorney Tabitha Solomon -- stars as the child of the mother being abused by her boyfriend.
Advance tickets are $20 and $15 for students; at the door, $25 and $20. Tickets may be purchased at Ruth's Cottage, the Leroy Rogers Senior Center, Beulah Hill Baptist Church and Northside Baptist Church, or call 229-386-0535.

COATS FOR KIDS
DONATIONS MAY BE TAKEN TO LOCAL CLEANERS
The Tift County Needy Children's Fund is once again sponsoring a coat drive for
 underprivileged children in the Tift County School System. Donated coats may be taken to two dry cleaners that have agreed to clean the coats free.
Coats will be collected until Dec. 20. All jackets, coats and sweaters for school-aged children can be taken to any Tifton locations of Carriage Cleaners and Kelly's Fashion Dry Cleaners, who will clean the items before distribution.

GA WRITERS HALL OF FAME
TO INDUCT POET LAUREATE

Georgia Writers Hall of Fame Introduction

Georgia's poet laureate Judson Mitcham and the late Toni Cade Bambara will be inducted into the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame on Nov. 11 at the University of Georgia.
Mitcham, a poet and novelist, is the only two-time winner of the Townsend Prize for Fiction. He was not formally trained as a writer. He earned his doctorate in psychology at UGA and spent his career as a psychology professor at Fort Valley State University where he taught for 30 years. His debut novel, "The Sweet Everlasting" (1996) and his second, "Sabbath Creek" (2004), were both published by the UGA Press. He also twice has been given the Georgia Author of the Year Award, for his first novel and "Somewhere in Ecclesiastes" (1991).
Bambara is well known for her teaching and community service, in addition to her award-winning writing, which focused on African-American culture. Her first novel, "The Salt Eaters," won the 1981 American Book Award and the Langston Hughes Society Award.
Born in New York City, Bambara lived in Atlanta for several stints in her career, including being writer in residence at Spelman College (1978-79), visiting professor in Afro-American Studies at Emory University (1975) and instructor at Atlanta University (1979). She died in 1995.
Mitcham and Bambara were elected to the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame by a board of judges appointed by the University of Georgia librarian and which includes academics, civic leaders, and librarians, the heads of the University of Georgia Press and The Georgia Review, and recent Hall of Fame inductees.

The Worth County town of Sumner and the Sumner Egg Festival are hosting a Fall Festival from 5-8 p.m. Nov. 2 in the Sumner Ball Park.
Games, contests, food, non-Halloween costume contest, hayride, and more will be available. Sumner is approximately 15 mils west of Tifton.

 Network Day from 10 a.m.-2 p.m Nov. 19 in Room 100 at Bowen Hall on the campus of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. There is no fee for employers seeking new employees and/or interns and schools seeking graduate students. Lunch will be provided for registrants. Students attending are majoring in areas that prepare them for careers in business and economic development, non-profits and governmental agencies, writing and communication fields, and business administration.
The event is designed to provide students and employers an environment to build relationships while helping identify and recruit graduate students, interns and/or employees.
