Empowering Community Health Organizations (E.C.H.O.) Project

The Affordable Care Act in the Capital Region: How to Enroll

On November 18th, the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services, African American Health Program (AAHP), Asian American Health Initiative (AAHI), and Latino Health Initiative (LHI), hosted a workshop entitled The Affordable Care Act in the Capital Region: How to Enroll as part of the E.C.H.O. Project 2014. Launched in 2011, E.C.H.O. is a series of practical and professional training workshops aimed to build the capacity and sustainability of community organizations.

AAHP, AAHI, and LHI invited a panel of Affordable Care Act (ACA) community partners to lead the interactive workshop. Each partner provided an overview of their current tailored efforts to enroll the community in the Capital Region (Montgomery County and Prince George's County). In addition to the panel, the Lead Health Navigator of Interfaith Works demonstrated how to enroll for health coverage on the Maryland Health Connection (MHC). The workshop included an introduction of the ACA community partners, a walk-through of the MHC, and audience question and answer sessions. There was a full house of over 120 attendees representing 62 organizations from the community.

Photos from the event can be viewed on our blog and the workshop summary can be found on our website (10.3 MB).

FY14 Hepatitis B Programs

In fiscal year 2014, AAHI is supporting local community partners with their respective hepatitis B prevention programs. Each program consists of education, screening, vaccination, and treatment referrals for hepatitis B. The three programs include:

Screening, Treatment, Outreach, and Prevention of Hepatitis B (STOP B) Program

Active Care & Treatment of Hepatitis B (ACT B) Program

Screening, Management, Awareness, and Solutions for Hepatitis B (SMASH-B) Program

The hepatitis B vaccination requires a series of 3 shots over a period of approximately 4-6 months. Please contact AAHI for upcoming activities. To learn more about past collaborative efforts, please visit AAHI's Publications page.

Health Promoters and ACA Outreach... Join Us

AAHI Health Promoters provide health education and outreach in the community.  Currently, they are raising awareness about the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as "Obamacare." At outreach events, Health Promoters encourage residents to visit sign-up locations where Navigators and Assisters can help with enrollment via the Maryland Health Connection. To see a complete list of sign-up locations in Montgomery County and Prince George's County, please visit online at the Capital Region Health Connector.

Our multilingual Health Promoters help overcome the linguistic and cultural barriers that can face the community when accessing health services. AAHI is seeking motivated candidates who speak English and an Asian language to join our team. We are currently accepting applications! Please help spread the word to those who may be interested in health and helping diverse communities.

If you would like to apply or learn more about our Health Promoter Program, please visit our Get Involved page. Any specific questions regarding the program can be directed to [email protected].

Sincerely,
