golfSTEM Forward 8th Annual Invitational

Join us on August 15, 2013 at Muskego Lakes Country Club for the 8th Annual STEM Forward Golf Invitational!   

 

As usual professionals and business leaders from numerous prominent Milwaukee firms will be on hand to support STEM education and enjoy a great day of golf. Proceeds from the event support scholarships for students pursuing STEM degrees at area Colleges and Universities, and also support local STEM programs for K-12 students. 

 

Registration includes 18 holes of golf (scramble format), cart, continental breakfast, buffet lunch, awards and raffle.  The event will also feature a hole-in-one contest, putting competition and additional hole events.

Wisconsin State Fair Robotics Rally
UW-Extension 4-H Youth Development and State Fair are partnering to offer the State Fair Robotics Rally this August 5, 6, and 7, 2013. The event will consist of an Education Day on the 5th were local robotics teams, companies, and robotics enthusiasts will demonstrate to fair goers  what is possible for careers in robotics. Teams will compete in the 2013 VEX� Robotics Challenge on August  6th. On the 7th youth will compete in the LEGO� NXT Mindstorm Challenge developed by the youth led Wisconsin State Fair Robotics Rally Design Team.

Volunteers are needed for the duration of the event.  Read below to see how you can get involved:
  • Education Day- August 5th, 2013
    Volunteers are needed for demonstrators are needed for the Education Day. Robotics companies and robotics teams are invited to participate.  If your group has exciting robotics project or research to share with the community please consider registering for the State Fair Robotics Rally Education Day.   
  • Robotics Rallies - August 6th and 7th, 2013
    Possible volunteer roles: judges, practice area monitors, time keepers, set-up & clean-up crew.

Summer STEAM Camps
This summer Gateway Technical College is hosting two STEAM camps for middle school students completing 6th-8th grade during the 2012/2013 school year in the SC Johnson iMET Center Fab Lab.
  • Camp Pioneer: Space Engineer
    Boy's Camp: June 17th-21st, 2013 (992-167-1cdb)

    Girl's Camp: June 24th-28th, 2013 (992-167-1cdg)
    8:00 am -12 noon
    Students will venture to a new planet that they will fabricate through engineering. As the camper's create their planets, they will have to determine how they will survive in the new environment. 
    Fee:   $165 per session

2013 Milwaukee Robofest
RoboFest is part competition, part STEM festival with universities, groups, enthusiasts  and businesses showing off fun and innovative STEM activities. The event will be held at the Wisconsin Expo Center on the Wisconsin State Fairgrounds on September 28th and 29th.

The Ultimate Ascent competition will take place on Saturday, September 28th, from approximately 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Sunday September 29th will be exhibition matches from 8:00 am - 2:00 pm and some other fun surprises that will be announced soon. Festival exhibitions will be ongoing for the entire weekend.

4-H Tech Wizards Need Mentors
Milwaukee County 4-H is looking for mentors to partner with 4-H Robotics clubs as a part of the 4-H Tech Wizards program.  Mentors will meet after school with teams and help them prepare for robotics challenges such as First Lego League in the fall and other 4-H robotics events throughout the year. This summer, teams will participate in field trips and the State Fair Robotics Rally. Mentor and robotics training are provided. Previous robotics experience is not required.

PAGE Program for STEM Education Leaders

The Science Museum of Minnesota is looking for STEM education leaders for their Peer Alliance Gender Equity (PAGE) program.   

 

PAGE is leadership program funded by a major grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF).  The program is dedicated to addressing the gender, racial, and class-based educational disparities in STEM in the region - Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.  PAGE is designed to develop the capacity of district education leaders in STEM to provide professional development to K-12 STEM teachers in research-based, gender-sensitive pedagogical classroom practices.  All costs for PAGE, including stipends, travel, books and materials, and a small budget for teams to use for work with their colleagues, are covered through funds from NSF.

 

 PROGRAM STRUCTURE:

  • PAGE is designed for teams of district-based STEM education leaders.    
  • Teams are selected through a competitive application process; up to 24 individuals are admitted into the program each    year.
  • The program consists of a 1-week Summer Institute, and three 2-day colloquia during the school year:
    • Institute:  July 8-July 12, 2013

      Colloquium 1:  October 3-4, 2013

      Colloquium 2:  January 16-17, 2014

      Colloquium 3:  May 15-16, 2014

  • All events take place at the Science Museum of Minnesota in St. Paul.
  • All costs for PAGE, including stipends, travel, books and materials, and a small budget for teams to use for work with their colleagues, are covered through funds from NSF.

Science Detectives Camp
UW-Whitewater Science Outreach invites students entering grades 3-8 in Fall 2013 to attend their new Science Detectives Camp.  Spend two days working closely with renowned UWW science professors sampling four different science disciplines using exciting, hands-on activities.  Choose your favorite science discipline and spend the entire third day diving into the sciences in greater detail!  Cost is $130 for 3 days, lunches, camp t-shirt, and a lab notebook is included.

RocketSTEM
Check out RocketSTEM, a free digital publication devoted to fostering STEM education efforts and promoting space exploration.

The publication has a wide variety of content geared to appeal to everyone from little kids to adults, as well as teaching aids for primary and secondary school educators.  It will mix in space history, along with interviews, career paths, astronomy lessons, aerospace news, museum features, NASA tech spinoffs, puzzles, games quizzes, lesson plans and other educational resources.

RocketSTEM will be releasing new issues as Spring (April) and Summer (June) editions before moving to a monthly production schedule with the August 2013 issue.
