Westland, MI - On Saturday, June 8th, Mayor William R. Wild was joined by local dignitaries, City Administrators and the Wayne-Westland Soccer Association to celebrate the opening of five new state-of-the-art soccer fields at the Thomas H. Brown Central City Park. With 15 balls lined up at the penalty line, the Mayor and other local leaders took their shot at goal, all at exactly 11:30am in between games for the Wayne-Westland Soccer Association's Summer League.
"When I became Mayor, I made the decision to close Central City Park because of the significant soil contamination issues. I also made restoring this jewel of our parks system my administrations top priority upon taking office in 2007. With the help of many of our partners, this land is being restored to the community gem it once was. These fields will now serve as the home to the extremely popular Wayne-Westland Soccer League", said Mayor Wild.
The upgraded sports fields were funded with support from the Wayne County Parks and Recreation millage. Former Wayne County Commissioner, Joan Gebhardt, helped to secure the $17,000 in funding for the soccer fields' capital improvements.
According to the Mayor, the updated Soccer Complex is just one piece of the grander scheme for the Thomas H. Brown Central City Park site. Future plans also include just over $3 million in investments to both Tattan Park and Central City Park, a move that is supported by both the City Council and the City's Downtown Development Authority. The installation of pavilions, a concession area with family style restrooms, a plaza area that will host numerous activities ranging from the Westland Farmers Market to concerts in the park and a walking path connecting the amenities are just a few of the highlights.
"I want to thank the City Council for their support and the residents for their patience," said Mayor Wild. These investments right in our neighborhoods have a direct impact on families, giving our children a safe, state-of-the art place to play year-round, as well as a place where parents and neighbors can come together."
