With the end of 2013 quickly approaching I wonder where the time went! How can it be that 2014 is around the corner when I just got used to it being 2013? This has been a real year of transition for The Gnu's Room in saying goodbye to the Auburn location and hello to the one in Opelika. It was a lot of work getting the new space prepared to open but so worth all the effort to have the chance to keep the non-profit organization going.
In coming to terms with the approach of 2014, I need to do something that is very difficult for me and that is to ask for help. In order to sustain The Gnu's Room for another year, there must be an investment from those who appreciate our mission and want to see it continue. I am looking for people who are willing to make annual tax-deductible gifts to The Gnu's Room. The gifts can be made weekly, monthly, quarterly or in one lump sum, but we need people to pledge to make a gift.
In order to continue operations, we need to raise $15,000 in pledges. For each level of giving, there will be a reward to the donor.
Pledge Levels & Rewards
For $1000.00 per year:
- One signed copy per month of a new book from an author hosted at The Gnu's Room (12 new books per year)
- One pound of coffee from Mama Mocha's Coffee Roastery per quarter (4 pounds per year)**
For $750.00 per year:
- One signed copy every other month of a new book from an author hosted at The Gnu's Room (6 new books per year)
- One half pound of Mama Mocha's Coffee each quarter (2 pounds per year)**
For $500.00 per year:
- One signed copy each quarter of a new book from an author hosted at The Gnu's Room (4 new books per year)
- One half pound of coffee from Mama Mocha's Coffee Roastery twice per year (1 pound per year)**
For $250.00 per year
- One signed copy of a new book from an author hosted by The Gnu's Room per year (1 new book per year)
- One used hardback per month (12 used hardbacks per year)
For $125.00 per year
- Six used hardbacks per year and six used paperbacks per year
All pledge levels receive a 10% discount on used book purchases for a 12-month period.
**Coffee rewards will be given in the form of vouchers that can be redeemed all at once or per the schedule of the chosen reward level.
If you are willing to make a pledge to keep The Gnu's Room going, you will be contributing to the support of literacy, to the publishing of local authors, to the support of the arts through our programming for the community, and to the future of a mobile arts and music education program currently in the research and planning stage.
Any donations made by December 31, 2013 will receive tax credit in 2013 with rewards given in 2014. Pledges may begin in 2014. Remember, donations can be made on whatever schedule is most convenient for the donor, but notification of the intent would be greatly appreciated for budgeting purposes.

EVENTS THIS WEEK:
Friday, December 13th from 6 to 9 p.m. - Christmas in a Railroad Town
This annual event offers something for all ages in historic downtown Opelika. Enjoy a variety of food vendors and restaurants with your family and friends. The kids can enjoy pony rides, caroling, letter writing to Santa and much more. Adults can tour the loft homes, and shop for personalized and one-of-a-kind items to finish up holiday shopping at one of the many retail shops downtown. You can take an open-air wagon ride through the Victorian Front Porch Christmas Tour or try an enclosed trolley ride. All events for this celebration are free and open to the public.
The Gnu's Room and Heritage Gifts & Gourmet will have local authors Mary Belk, Marian Carcache, and Peter Huggins on hand to sign and personalize copies of their recently published books which would make the perfect gifts for the readers on your list.
