 We've all made New Year's resolutions. Exercise more, work less, eat healthier and keep to a budget. Many times our resolutions are focused around our personal well-being, our life and our businesses. I think we can all agree, when I say giving back to our community can be the most rewarding resolution of them all.
Not only is investing in your community a fulfilling personal experience, but you also get to see the benefit in those around you. We all want to make a difference in our towns and you can do that in 2014. That's why we ask you consider a more active role in your Chamber. The Dana Point Chamber is not only here to improve business in Dana Point, but to unite us as one business community.
Instead at looking to check something off your list this holiday, make a resolution to help others. Remember the tough road you endured while starting-up your business and consider mentoring a young local business. Help a business get off the ground by forming a partnership. Or remember the many worthy causes in Dana Point and volunteer at a non-profit.
Consider joining any one of our committees. Our Education Committee assists local schools by providing mentoring programs and scholarships to local high school students. Our Government Affairs Committee is proactive and designated to inform our lawmakers on the positions of the local business community. Our Tourism Committee focuses on combining the efforts of Dana Point's tourism related businesses to promote Dana Point as a destination. These committees are just a few of the wonderful opportunities you have to give back into your community.
Make a real difference in 2014 and "be the change you want to see in the world".

Dana Wharf Honored with Longevity Award at Family Owned Business Awards Luncheon
|
We are proud to announce that our longtime member and friend of the Dana Point Chamber, Dana Wharf Sportfishing and Whale Watching has been presented with the Longevity Award at this year's Orange County Business Journal's Family Owned Business Award. The Longevity award acknowledges Dana Wharf, their dedicated team of expert captains, friendly crew and an excellent support staff, with over 40 years of providing private charters, whale watching and sportfishing. In addition, Dana Wharf, has been a strong supporter of local charities, non-profits and has worked tirelessly to improve our local community. From all of us here at the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce, Congratulations Dana Wharf!
Message from the Dana Wharf Whale Watching and Sportfishing
Thank you for your continued support of Dana Wharf. After over 42 years in business, our family is pleased to have been nominated for the Orange County Business Journal's Family Owned Business Awards, 2013. My Dad, Don Hansen, founded Dana Wharf back in 1971 and was the first business to operate out of Dana Point Harbor. We practice responsible sportfishing, including catch and release.
My Dad originated Whale Watching in Orange County and is proud to be exclusively endorsed by the artist Wyland. Our expert Captains are Certified Cetaceans and Naturalists who love to share their knowledge and experience. Many professional researchers, photographers, and naturalists go out with Dana Wharf and we are proud to be their guides.
Through the years, we've introduced many adventures, including the annual Dana Point Festival of Whales, Holiday Boat Parade of Lights, Halibut Derby, a variety of themed Harbor Cruises, a Kid's Club, Santa Boat Rides, Youth Award Certificate program, Wyland Art Lessons in the Wild, Fish for Life and much more. It is a pleasuring sharing the many wonders of our Pacific Ocean with visitors and locals every day.
We know that giving back to the community is both our responsibility and a privilege. My brother Michael and I continue with my Dad's mission to expose and teach to ensure children have the opportunity to experience and learn about the incredible marine mammals and how important they are to our ecosystem.

Member Spotlight: Mogavero Orthodontics
|
As professionals our lives can be business 24/7, but it's important for us to get to know YOU as a person, member and leader in the community.
This month, we chose to feature Dr. Frank Mogavero of Mogavero Orthodontics, who has been a member of the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce for over 20 years. We sat down with Dr. Mogavero to get the inside scoop about him, his practice and what he thinks about the Chamber.
Can you please tell us a brief history of your business?
I established my orthodontic practice in San Juan Capistrano in 1990, later moving to Monarch Beach and now to San Clemente, but my Team and I are still serving the South Orange County area including Dana Point now for almost 24 years! I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from UCLA in 1984, and my Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from UCLA in 1988. I earned a specialty Certificate in Orthodontics from Baylor College of Dentistry in 1990, as well as two Master of Science degrees, one from UCLA and one from Baylor. I became a Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics in 1992. I have served as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Orthodontics at USC for five years, and have been sought after as an expert for many orthodontic malpractice cases.
Why did you join the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce?
I joined the Chamber because I love to be involved with my community and I love to give back to my community. Mixers and city events are a great way to meet other residents and business people!
Can you tell us a fun fact about your business that most people wouldn't know?
I am the only Premier Preferred Provider of Invisalign in South Coastal OC, and am one of the few doctors who has been treating with Invisalign since it was first introduced in 2000, almost 14 years ago! Our practice provides braces and Invisalign for both children and adults, and we specialize in Early Orthodontic Treatment for younger children. CUSD Foundation
The mission of the CUSD Foundation is to raise money by developing partnerships with businesses and the community to enhance the quality of education for every student in the Capistrano Unified School District.
Founded in 1992, our non-profit organization has raised over $2,000,000 for students, teachers and schools over the last decade, providing much needed resources to enrich student learning experiences that fall outside the district's budgetary reach. Our volunteer-based, non-profit educational partnership raises funds through a variety of programs and fundraising events throughout the year. But we still have much more to do to ensure that government funding cuts do not have a severe impact on our student's education.
