New Report Examines Ways to Spur Opportunities Provided by Demographic Changes
At Tuesday's (Dec. 10) National Press Club event in Washington, D.C., Generations United and The Generations Initiative unveiled our latest report, Out of Many, One: Uniting the Changing Faces of America.

The report is based on findings of a new poll Generations United and The Generations Initiative commissioned from Harris Interactive. Among the report finding: Americans of all generations are aware of the country's changing age and race demographics and the vast majority are accepting of them, dispelling the "generational conflict narrative." So much so that 72 percent of older and younger respondents believe that publicly funded programs targeted at specific age groups such as K-12 education or Social Security aren't burdensome responsibilities, but investments that benefit all generations.

Generations United Board member Walter Jones, region president at Verizon, emceed the event. In his remarks, he said, "Our country has flourished based on the belief Out of Many, One and it will continue to flourish as long as we remember we are stronger together."

Maria Urbina, legislative correspondence manager for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, shared her inspirational story about rising from humble beginnings and the people in her life who embodied the community values of humility and hard work, leaving a lasting impression on her. "That's the thing with mentorships," she said, "they can last for decades or a lunch period."

Ron Brownstein, editorial director for Strategic Partnerships and long-term editorial strategy at Atlantic Media, moderated a panel of national policy experts that included Angela Glover-Blackwell, founder and chief executive officer at Policy Link, Vanessa Cardenas, vice president of Progress 2050 at the Center for American Progress, William Frey, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, and Eugene Steuerle, Richard B. Fisher Chair at Urban Institute.

Donna Butts, executive director of Generations United, and Hilary Pennington, director of The Generations Initiative, paid homage to the late Nelson Mandela and acknowledged that Tuesday's event also marked the 20th anniversary of the former South African President's Nobel Peace Prize acceptance. "Today is particularly inspiring, emotional and so very important as the world pays tribute to Nelson Mandela, a man who understood deeply the importance of unity," Butts said.

Quoting Mandela, Pennington alluded to the event's call to action for everyone to think outside of the traditional boxes of race and age: "Let it never be said by future generations that indifference, cynicism or selfishness made us fail to live up to the ideals of humanity which the Nobel Peace Prize encapsulates."
