Alumna Green elected mayor of Awendaw, S.C.

Alumna Miriam Green was recently elected mayor of Awendaw, S.C. Green, a 1998 graduate who received a Bachelor of Science degree in business, was elected mayor on Nov. 5.
She currently serves as district manager of the Awendaw District with Berkeley Electric Cooperative. She previously served as vice president of community service with the district. Green also manages her own restaurant and catering business.Green has 36 years of service with Berkeley Electric Cooperative, seven years as chairperson of Charleston County Advisory Board, and she is coordinator of the housing department for Awendaw.
She is a member of various organizations including Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., the Black Caucus Advisory and Black Page Advisory Board, Charleston County Grants Administrations Advisory Board, NAACP and East Cooper African American Business and Professional Association.
Green is married to Robert L. Green, Sr., and they have two children, two grandchildren and many adopted children.

November Alumni Highlight
The alumni highlight for November is Victor Stevenson, a 2000 graduate with a bachelor's degree in sociology.
Stevenson, now known as Enoch El-Shamesh, is a professional photographer in the Washington, D.C. area. He holds the position of lead photographer with three independent magazines, which are Kapital Magazine and Experience Reality Magazine, both in Washington, D.C. and Responsible ARTistry magazine in Atlanta, Ga.
He has toured and photographed various major artists such as Public Enemy, KRS-ONE, Special Ed, Ice T, New Edition and Tamala Jones. Additionally, he has had a private session with the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan.
Stevenson is also currently working as the official photographer for RAWartists, a company based out of California. His recent accomplishments include being nominated as Photographer of the Year in 2012 by RAWartists community, being spotlighted on candidfaces.com and running his own photography studio in 2011.
El-Shamesh Photography consists of events, nightlife, parties, weddings, head shots, photo shoots, touring with bands and keeping the company very diverse when it comes to photograph y.

Voorhees welcomes alumni and supporters to Homecoming 2013

Voorhees College celebrated its annual homecoming celebration Nov. 3-9 under the theme "The Vision Continues."
Some of the student activities included a comedy show and concert with comedian Michael Blackson and rap group Travis Porter, fashion show, glow party mini fair, field day and pep rally.

The alumni activities were kicked off with the first homecoming golf tournament on Nov. 7 at Sweetwater Country Club in Barnwell, S.C. Sponsors for the tournament were Subway of Denmark, Winton Inn & Suites, South Carolina Bank & Trust, Atlantic Broadband, ABL Education Enterprise, AFFirm, Toyota of Orangeburg, Country Inn & Suites, McDonalds of Denmark, Morgan Stanley of Columbia, Parker Poe Consulting of Columbia, Freezie Breezie, Fairfield Auto Sales, Major Graphics, Linda's Awards and Gifts, B&B Ford of Barnwell, Dan Martin Allstate Agency, Brooker True Value Hardware and the Law Office of Ronnie Sabb.
Former and current faculty and staff members and alumni came from near and far to celebrate Homecoming 2013.
"I enjoy homecoming every year, and the fellowship with my fellow alumni is well worth the trip," said Darryl Byrd, a 1993 graduate from Voorhees. Byrd, who lives in Atlanta, has traveled back to Voorhees every year for homecoming since graduating 20 years ago.

On November 8, the institution inducted fivenew members into the Hall of Fame. The five inductees were Betty Davis, a 1980 alumna, Leonard E. Dawson, former president of Voorhees, Wilhelmina J. Moore, a 1956 graduate of Voorhees High School and Junior College, Jerry M. Screen, former Voorhees College Board Chairman, and Rep. Robert Williams, a 1992 alumnus.
"I would like to congratulate and commend our 2013 class of Hall of Fame recipients," said President Sellers. "Because of their unwavering support of Voorhees College, students will be able to not only receive a quality education but become productive citizens in our society."
On Nov. 9, the Homecoming parade took place, along with the women and men's basketball games, where both teams conquered a win against Brewton-Parker College of Mount Vernan, Ga.
Following the homecoming games, the annual Greek Step Show was held, and the 2013 winners were Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.
"I appreciate the continued support from our loyal alumni," said Sellers. "I hope that our alumni will continue to come back to the institution throughout the year to participate in some of our upcoming activities."

Voorhees student selected by Teach for America

Recently, a Voorhees student was accepted into Teach for America, an organization that recruits committed recent college graduates and professionals of all backgrounds to teach for two years in urban and rural public schools, according to Teach for America's website.
Demetrius Cleveland was accepted into the program and will begin teaching in August 2014. Cleveland, a sports management major, was selected to Teach for America Metro Atlanta Corps, where he will be teaching secondary English.
"Words can't explain the joy that I have right now. I will get the opportunity to go back to Georgia and influence the lives of youth who might be going through a struggle and need guidance.
Cleveland, who graduated from South Gwinnett High School in Snellville, Ga. and is originally from Flint, Mich., attributes the leadership qualities learned at Voorhees to assisting him with being accepted into the organization.
"The leadership qualities that I inherited during my matriculation at Voorhees College played a significant role on my acceptance to a final interview and eventually the Teach for America Corps," he said.
"At times, I didn't see myself graduating from high school or even making it to college yet alone graduating from college. Since coming to Voorhees College, I have seen myself grow and learned that I can and will do anything that I put my mind to."
Cleveland said that he wanted to be a teacher to make a difference in the lives of many students, especially those from African American communities.
"A lot of students in the African American community grow up without a father figure or do not have anyone that has a positive influence on their lives. I feel that teachers have a direct influence on how far students go academically and in everyday life. I will not only serve as an educator to my students but also as a mentor, leader and father figure to my students."
While at Voorhees, Cleveland is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. and White Rose Social Club. He also serves as a student coach for the men's basketball team, sports director for WVCD radio station on campus and president of the NAACP.
