A Note From Government Relations
By Mary Williams, LMP

With Legislature in full swing, the massage therapy industry in Montana is seeing some bills up for  review and vote.  Senate Bill 104 will be removing the grandfather clause from massage licensing program. The licensing board is requesting to remove this language as it is now obsolete. The purpose of this part of massage licensing was intended for people practicing massage prior to 2010 to be grandfathered in without required education and experience. Removing the "grandfathering" language would eliminate any confusion about being grandfathered in now.

This item, plus two more in the next article will be voted on in Legislature. If you would like to express your opinion to the Board, you may write to them. The address is: Board of Massage Therapists 301 South Park PO Box 200513, Helena MT 59620-0513

A Bit More Legislation
By Mary Williams, LMP

Senate Bill 76 supports the board to suspend massage license if a licensed massage therapist is not in compliance with the standards and rules licensed by the board. It also is more comprehensive about requirements for renewal of license and more strict towards licenses that have lapsed or expired. It is also proposing "random audits up to 50% of all licensees who have renewed their licenses to determine compliance with board or program continuing education requirements."

Senate Bill 79 is an act for the Department of Licensing to have more authority for delegating fees as related to costs of running the Board. This is for all L&I boards, including massage. It gives each licensing board authority to set fees for their program. It was mentioned at the last state board meeting that the cost for massage license and renewals will increase in the near future.

Happy PI Day!
The Red Rooster Cafe

In honor of Pi day, 3.14.2015, here is a great place to try out in Billings, MT.  It might be good, it might be bad, it's fairly uncertain.  What is certain is that they have pie.  A lot of pie.

Some good local people run the joint: Misty and Kenneth Miller.  The serve lunch and are open early for breakfast or just a quick cup of coffee.  Check it out!

Massage Cop at the Crowne Plaza
What is Lavon Going to be teaching?

Massage therapist fight against the stereotype constantly.  The idea that somehow massage and sex are inextricably intertwined and while the fight to unwind this knotted mess on the other side of the spectrum is the underground.  Prostitution and human trafficking using massage therapy as a front.

At this years convention, in Billings,  Lavon Watson will be talking on some of the finer points of the industry.  What does it look like?  Who does it affect and most importantly: what can legitimate massage therapists do about it?
