Future of Healthcare Conference 2014:
The Role of Art in Health & Creative Change

By: Bousa Tatpaporn

futurehealthcareconfLast August, members of the NorCal Arts & Health Alliance now known as Arts & Health California, came together for a "Dream Retreat" to discuss the future of health care and how the arts can be integrated as a creative healing force. Arts & Health California is an alliance and resource hub of health professionals, artists, and program directors in California who are joining efforts to forge future collaborations in the integration and engagement of Arts & Health and well-being. Dr. Alan Siegel, director of the Alliance, said "the goal is to integrate art and healing fully into our health systems". In realizing that organizations were not connected, he and others feel that building a network is important in bringing attention to Arts & Health and making it mainstream.

The "Dream Retreat" included the spark to planning "The Future of Healthcare Conference 2014: The Role of Art in Health and Creative Change" held at SF State University on November 8th.

Keynote speakers included:

  • Naj Wikoff, who talked about the history of arts in healthcare and how creating a healing environment not only benefits staff but also creates an experience where patients feel like a whole person rather than a disease
  • Doug Banner, a professional storyteller, spoke about the power of stories, its ability to change perspectives and help us find meaning in conflict, illness and loss.
  • Gary Malkin, an Emmy-award winning composer, who brought an awareness of how music is medicine and encouraged everyone to acknowledge their internal soundtrack and reclaim music's role as a catalyst for wellness
  • Ilene Serlin, a dance- and psychotherapist spoke about how dance encourages new behaviors and serves as a vehicle to integrate body, mind and spirit
  • Aiko Yoshino, an Assistant Professor in SF Dept of Recreation, Parks and Tourism, stressed the importance of engaging with nature and play. She cleverly composed the audience in creating the sound of thunder and rain using our hands and body.

One of the most touching moments of the conference was when artist Cindy Perlis, director of the UCSF's Art for Recovery program, introduced patients, including Elizabeth Jameson, who shared her story of how art helped save her life during her struggle with multiple sclerosis.

The conference offered an interactive lunch with different art stations for attendees to engage and attendees had workshops on how to tap into art as a healing force and forge creative change.

"We are all healers and artists" was the mantra through out the day.

fundraisingArt of Health and Healing is having a Winter/Spring 2015 fundraiser and specifically want to improve the Healing Environment in our hospital (Contra Costa Regional) and Health Centers.

Partnered with the Contra Costa Regional Health Foundation (CCRHF), every dollar is 100% tax deductible. We recently brought Arts & Health pioneer and expert Naj Wikoff for a 2-day consultation (grant by CCRHF) to work on improving our healing environment. Here is the video from the Improvement Academy.

Art of Health and Healing is dedicated to utilizing the arts and creativity to transform health, healing, and wellness within CCHS and our community. The arts contribute to what it means to be human, especially in times of illness. Research shows the benefits of the arts and health, demonstrating the critical role of the arts in the health and well-being of individuals and communities.

There are many ways to contribute, both in time and money.

It has been an exciting last few months in the AHH world, with collaborating on a regional conference, hiring new energized Expressive Arts Therapists, and seeing some of the fruits of our toils maturing. In November, we hired Arts & Health pioneer and consultant Naj Wikoff for a 2-day consultation to help move our program forward. Naj has been a leader in the field over the last 30 years and consulted widely to health systems both nationally and internationally.

As we are starting 2015, we are prioritizing more programming to support our staff and staff wellness through the arts, improving our Healing Environment, and further boosting our patient programming. We will be having more Expressive Arts in our group visits, and exploring both an Artists-in-Residence program and expanding artists at the bedside.

We are also looking at raising money to improve our Healing Environment. See below to donate (100% tax deductible).

Improvement Academy: Where Art and Health Meet. Creating Healing Environments with Arts & Health Expert & Pioneer, Naj Wikoff.

healingenvironmentsOn November 7th, 2014, Art of Health and Healing hosted an Improvement Academy at the Regional Medical Center in Martinez (sponsored by CCRHF). Naj Wikoff presented on how to create the best optimal healing environment for CCHS' Regional Medical Center and Health Centers. As research on the benefits of healing environments and the Arts continue to grow, more hospitals are paying attention to the evidence and investing in the Arts. Several studies show that creative programs and healing environments in hospitals not only benefits patients and improves health outcomes but they also improve the health and wellness of staff members and the greater community.

Naj Wikoff toured the facilities and provided a 2-day consultation on improving and expanding healing environments and moving forward other aspects of the strategic plan.

His major points included:
  • Healing Environments are essential in making a hospital feel more welcome and safe
  • It reflects a patient and family-centered approach to healthcare
  • The use of Arts & Health can be used to improve doctor/patient relationships, help retain staff, and make deeper connections with the community
  • In creating an optimal healing environment, key elements include creating a warm place with a sense of safety and feeling 'like you are home'
  • Incorporating art that reflects the community's culture & people to create a greater sense of connection
  • Our own West County Health Center is one of the best examples of a Healing Environment he has ever seen - and we should let others know of this pearl.
His evidence-based recommendations include:
  • Using a variety of warm colors and textures which have been shown to relax patients and aid in faster healing
  • Creating quiet spaces such as healing gardens or labyrinths that offer patients and staff a place to relax or meditate
  • Avoid creating patterned spaces and art that looks the same rather incorporate nature and revitalize spaces by changing and moving art from time to time
Several AHH projects are currently under way in this area. If approved, permanent art collections will be added to the new George Miller Wellness Center, the hospital's Inpatient Psychiatry Unit and Psych Emergency will receive painted murals, and beautiful pictures, such as those on Labor & Delivery, will be enhanced.
