Falling With Gravity

Drop water to keep it in the cup!

What you need

Large paper cup

A ballpoint pen or other pointed object

Water

What you do

1. Use the pen to punch a small hole in the side of the cup, near the bottom.

2. Stand somewhere where you can get wet.

3. Hold your thumb over the hole and fill the cup with water.

4. Hold the cup at shoulder height and remove your thumb. The water should stream out.

5. Observe the stream of water as you let go of the cup. What happens as it falls?

What's going on?

You saw microgravity happen! Earth's gravity pulls objects towards the ground. It pulls water out of the cup's hole towards the ground. Gravity pulls the cup towards the ground when you let it go. The water in the cup stops streaming out of the cup because both the cup and water fall at the same speed. We call this microgravity or free falling. Astronauts free fall when on board a spacecraft orbiting the Earth. Gravity pulls the spacecraft and everything inside -astronauts included - at the same speed. The result is microgravity. It makes the spacecraft's contents float!

Engineer, Astronaut Mission Specialist

Being a good scientist doesn't always mean having both feet firmly planted on the ground. Soichi Noguchi, of the Japan Society for Aeronautical and Space Sciences (JAXA), has spent a total of 177 days, 3 hours and 4 minutes in space. His last flight was with the Soyuz TMA-17 mission to the International Space Station (ISS). During this time, the ISS established direct, live internet access. Noguchi used this link to share over 600 photos from 354 km (220 miles) above the Earth via Twitter's Twitpics!

First Friday - Space Day

Space agencies across the world are exploring ways to expand human presence beyond the Earth. Soon Virgin Galactic will begin commercial space flights. About 570 people have signed up to tour space. Watch an interview by Virgin's CEO earlier this week and find out how soon it could be before you could be exploring our Solar System!

Third Friday - Endangered Species Day

Here is a pictorial guide to many of Missouri's endangered plants and animals.  You can do your part to protect our native species. Small acts such as switching to natural weed control from herbicides can have a big impact!

10 - Annular Solar Eclipse

The Moon will pass in front of the Sun, partially blocking sunlight to the Earth. An annular solar eclipse means the Sun will look like a ring - but don't look directly at it! Unfortunately, it will not be visible in North America.

22 - International Day of Biodiversity

Start caring for ecosystems and biodiversity by buying locally, choosing native plant species to decorate gardens and taking safari nature walks!

23 - World Turtle Day

Missouri has 17 kinds of turtles. All but three are protected.
