Greetings!
Time flies when you're having fun - so it's no surprise to me that I've hardly noticed the passing of a decade! This summer marks the 10th anniversary of Distinctive Art Source, and while so many things in the industry have changed over the years, our passion for healthcare art programs has remained the same. I am grateful for the privilege of working alongside some of the finest clients, staff and industry professionals in the country. These past 10 years have been filled with unbridled energy as together we have searched for answers, explored possibilities and shared our findings. The continued collaborative quest of healthcare owners, physicians and staff, architects, engineers, designers, landscape architects and art consultants to create the best possible healthcare experience, for patients and their families, makes the world of healthcare art consulting both challenging and rewarding. But most of all I thank you all for being catalysts in helping to transform healthcare standards across the country. Thank you for inviting us in to your world and providing so many opportunities for Distinctive Art Source to do what we love most - create positive patient experiences through distinctive art programs. It's an honor and a pleasure to work with each and every one of you! Sincerely, Barbara Harriman, IIDA President/Creative Director Distinctive Art Source

10 Healthcare Art Bloopers: Free Whitepaper
The EARTH without ART may be EH, but healthcare art without thought for the patient can be PAINFUL.
Research shows that appropriate artwork in the healthcare setting can help alleviate stress, reduce the need for pain medication and provide a positive distraction. But what happens when we find inappropriate artwork in the healthcare setting? In honor of Distinctive Art Source's 10th anniversary let's take a look at 10 painful, but avoidable, art bloopers created when art is placed without considering the patient viewer. Art bloopers can easily create negative responses and added stress while patient-based art selections can result in positive patient responses that may reduce stress.
While Real estate is all about location, location, location, Healthcare art is about location AND content, which means selecting appropriate artwork in the healthcare setting must include consideration of the subject matter as it relates to the patient population, the available space and the stress levels and viewing times of a particular location.

If We Could See Inside Others' Hearts
"Could a greater miracle take place than for us to look through each other's eyes for an instant?" - Henry David Thoreau Here is a wonderful illustration of the importance of seeing things from the perspective of others. Understanding what's taking place in the heart and mind of the viewer is the root of evidence and patient based art. As art consultants, we consider the perspective of the viewer in creating every art program. That means we think about who will be viewing an art installation, how long they will be viewing it, their potential stress level at the time and how often they will view the same piece. It's a lot to consider when creating an art program - but when you truly take time to view the healthcare experience from the perspective of others, these details make a huge difference.
