Holistic Child Health Newsletter
July 2013

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the Holistic Child Health Newsletter.

The goal of my holistic pediatric practice, and of this newsletter, is to inform and support parents to become more empowered as the primary health care providers for their children. Extending far beyond Western medicine's conventional treatments, holistic medicine and mindful parenting allow us to boost children's natural immunity, support their optimum health and wellness, safely heal any illnesses, and prevent disease-without dangerous side effects.  Holistic medicine provides us with the tools to nurture the physical, emotional, social and spiritual health of your children.

Over the coming months and years, I intend to use this newsletter to address some of your concerns as parents, share information that you might want to add to your knowledge base, and inform you of important issues and current events that are happening in the news, and in your area.

Together we can heal the whole child. Naturally.

Yours in Health,

Lawrence B. Palevsky, MD

Iodine Deficiency Has Negative Impact on Child Cognition

Dr Palevsky's Comments: Increasing numbers of women are suffering from thyroid disease, and the issue of adequate iodine levels in their bodies is just one of the contributing factors that impact the health of their thyroid glands. Iodine is an important element that helps maintain healthy thyroid function and the production of adequate thyroid hormone levels. Even if women are eating adequate amounts of iodine, derived from dried seaweed, kelp, cod, seafood, cranberries, organic navy beans, organic strawberries, himalayan crystal salt, & baked potatoes with the skins, their iodine levels may still be low because of their over-exposure to other metals that inhibit the thyroid's ability to appropriately utilize iodine.

These metals, which compete for iodine's place in the thyroid gland's production of thyroid hormones include, bromine, found in flame retardants, medicines, pesticides, & cleaning solutions; chlorine, found in pools, drinking water, bleach for paper, cloth, & detergents, pesticides, rubber, & solvents; and fluorine/fluoride, found in factory wastes, drinking water, wire insulation, LCD displays, paints, drugs & supplements. It's important for everyone to be diligent about their iodine consumption, and avoid bromine, chlorine and fluoride exposure as much as possible, in order to maintain adequate thyroid health.

Other reasons for reduced thyroid function include soy and gluten sensitivities, along with other food allergies, exposure to other environmental chemicals, including plastics and solvents, nutrient deficiencies, like selenium, and exposure to heavy metals, specifically mercury from amalgams, consumption and inhalation of mercury contaminated water and air, respectively, from run-off of factory wastes, fish consumption, and vaccinations.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Will Detection of Unapproved Genetically Modified Wheat Decimate US Economy?

Dr Palevsky's Comments: I have had an interesting relationship with wheat. During times of my adult life when I've eaten wheat, I've gained weight, felt sluggish, had increased congestion and clearing of my throat, suffered lots of allergy symptoms during hay fever season, become an adolescent again with intermittent pimples on my face, had headaches, developed dry skin, experienced many different types of mood swings, had difficulty falling or staying asleep, and have felt bloated with atypical bowel habits. Having come off wheat, and I do mean come off wheat because I believe our bodies are developing a true opiate-like addiction to this grain, all of these issues have resolved. I even believe some of the gray in my hair is reversing since I stopped wheat again 2 months ago. Go figure.

Perhaps my reaction is due to my immune systems' response to the genetically modified wheat that exists in this country. In the past, I don't remember having such horrible responses to wheat when I've traveled to other countries, although my experience may not true for everyone who is allergic to, sensitive to, or intolerant of wheat. In October 2012, I ate bread and cheese and meat and desserts while in Madrid and San Sebastian, and lost weight. But, another interesting thing happened. Even though I ate these foods, and wasn't necessarily more active than I am in the US, my appetite was satiated earlier in the meal, so I just didn't feel like eating that much. I was full and satisfied with smaller portions. This same phenomenon has occurred now that I'm off wheat again. I just don't have the desire to eat as much as I used to. It seems like the chemical drive to keep putting food in my mouth, regardless of how distended my stomach may have felt from eating, has disappeared now that I don't have wheat in my diet. Even my sugar cravings have dissipated without wheat in my diet.

It has been well established that children and adults have morphine-like chemical reactions to wheat and, therefore, develop an addictive-like demand to eat it. It has also been established that the genetically modified wheat can alter the bacterial flora in the intestines. And, as the science is beginning to show us, much of our desire to eat is instigated by the chemical signals that occur between the bacterial flora in our intestines and our immune and nervous systems, through cytokine and neurotransmitter activity in the intestinal lining.

Do yourselves a favor, and your kids a favor. Try not to eat this unhealthy grain. It's killing us. And, in all likelihood, so is the gluten protein in rye, barley, spelt, kamut, and oats, as well. Of course, this brings up the other reason so many people may be sensitive to wheat and gluten, and that is the possibility that gluten, just like casein, soy, eggs, and peanuts, is injected into our bodies through vaccines. We are seeing a huge rise in allergies, sensitivities and intolerances to these foods, and we can't ignore how injecting these foods items into the body is making our bodies sick. But, as many of you know, as authorities continue to explore
GMO
why there is such an exponential rise in food allergies, they simply circle the subject of vaccines, but never bring this sacrosanct topic into public discourse. They list every possible known reason for the rise in allergies, yet, the subject of vaccines remains the elephant in the room. Our bodies are getting hit from both sides.

SUMMER SMARTS

Dr Palevsky's Comments: The sun does not have to be our dreaded enemy if we expose ourselves properly. We need sun exposure for 'photosynthesis' much in the way plants do. The use of unhealthy sunscreens can not only increase the toxic load in our bodies, but it can prevent our bodies from accumulating the vitamin D levels we require for adequate immune and cellular function. With that said, if our diets contain sufficient antioxidants, and a decreased amount of oxidative foods, we will have less of an adverse reaction to the sun and its potential damages. For short, intermittent exposures to the sun, I do not recommend sunscreen. And, for people who have darker skin pigments, it's really important that you get out into the sun for longer periods of time without sunscreen, and with proper diets, to maximize your body's production of vitamin D. For prolonged sun exposure, I recommend buying sunscreens that use zinc oxide as the primary active ingredient. See www.ewg.org/2013sunscreen/
for further information. For app aficionados, take a look at D-Minder for your smartphone. Depending on the latitude of where you live, it'll help you calculate how much sun exposure you can tolerate without sunscreen before your skin will burn and when is the best time of day to get out into the sun for maximizing your potential vitamin D production.

QUESTION OF THE MONTH
Each month, Dr Palevsky will be answering a hot topic question....

 Q

Dr Palevsky, would you agree with this article's assessment of ADHD?

A

ADD/ADHD is a diagnosis that results from a multitude of contributing factors. We can look at genetics, in utero exposures, diet, food sensitivities, food chemicals, environmental toxins, vaccines, medical choices, parenting styles, electro-magnetic radiation, and other environmental exposures that combine to agitate their central nervous systems into a diagnosis of ADD/ADHD. Nonetheless, as it relates to this article, I do not condone the approach that supports having a baby cry it out. Babies need consistent connection and understanding that they are being protected and appropriately attended to. They can't do anything on their own, and don't know their parents are around when they can't see them or feel their presence. Crying it out just teaches them abandonment. It doesn't teach them self-soothing, at all. What this article does bring up is the fact that children will do better in a household where parents are authoritative, consistent, and in-charge. Children feel safe, protected, and loved when their parents are calm and assertive, and demonstrate that they are the leaders of the pack. Children do better when they know and understand their limits, and the parents are clear and not afraid to show them who is in-charge. When babies are infantilized, babied, held onto, over-protected and not given their chance to appropriately separate and learn on their own, we will see some of the self-esteem issues, and emotional quotients that are often under-developed in children with ADD/ADHD. What I find important about this article is how differently behaved children can be when parents are firmly in charge, which as we all know, can happen without spanking or hitting. It appears that the French provide their children with some of the appropriate parenting their children need, crying it out and spanking, notwithstanding. Families with children with ADD/ADHD can often benefit from parenting instruction that gives them tools to see and respect their children for who they are, and not project on to them their ideas of who they want their children to be. These tools also provide parents with much needed guidance on how to help build their children's self-esteem. In my experience, children with ADD/ADHD do better when the parents modify their parenting styles as part of the holistic approach that helps their children improve their performance and emotional development.
