About the Health Insurance Exchange
What it is: Created by the Affordable Care Act, the health insurance exchange is an online marketplace where consumers will be able to compare health plans offered by private insurance companies, figure out whether they're eligible for government health programs and determine whether they qualify for federal financial help to buy coverage.
Whom it's for: For the most part, the exchange will serve people who don't get affordable coverage through their jobs, not on a government plan like Medicare, Medicaid, VA or Tricare, individual or family coverage like the self-employed and students not currently on their parents health plans. Nearly 900,000 Georgians are expected to shop on the exchange. |
Georgia Insurance Exchange Carriers
On August 1st, the Georgia Insurance commissioner approved the news exchange or marketplace plans that will be offered for state residents. The five companies that will offer plans to Georgia residents this first year will be: Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia, Peach State, Kaiser, Alliant and Humana. |
Subsidy Calculator
This tool illustrates health insurance premiums and subsidies for people purchasing insurance on their own in new health insurance exchanges (or "Marketplaces") created by the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Beginning in October 2013, middle-income people under age 65, who are not eligible for coverage through their employer, Medicaid, or Medicare, can apply for tax credit subsidies available through state-based exchanges.
Georgia did not expand Medicaid, so some people may still be eligible for Medicaid, some will be eligible for subsidized coverage through Marketplaces, and others will not be eligible for subsidies.
With this calculator, you can enter different income levels, ages, and family sizes to get an estimate of your eligibility for subsidies and how much you could spend on health insurance. As premiums and eligibility requirements may vary, contact your state's Medicaid office or exchange with enrollment questions.

Georgia Maternity Benefits back for 2014 plans
For those not currently on a Employer plan or Medicaid, maternity benefits were a casualty for Georgia women and families on the individual market in 2013. With new essential benefits required under the new health care reform law, all health insurance plans beginning in 2014 must include Maternity and newborn care. If you are planning on expanding your family in 2014, you must have one of the new 2014 plans to have maternity benefits. Please contact us for a quote during open enrollment!
