2013 Fall Fling a Huge Success

The New London Area Chamber of Commerce's 2nd Annual Fall Fling is in the history books and by all accounts it was a huge success.

On Thursday, Oct. 10th New London's north side businesses rolled out the red carpet between the hours of 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. for their regular customers as well as those participating in the Fall Fling. The Chamber would like to thank the 18 participating businesses and 13 participating vendors who provided facility tours, information, one-day specials and a variety of delicious snacks and lunch options to hundreds of participants. We would also like to thank all of the businesses and organizations that donated prizes for the event. You all contributed to the success of this event.

After participants had a fun day of visiting our local businesses and organizations they gathered at Crystal Falls Banquets & Catering from 6 - 7 p.m. for the Fall Fling Chili Cook Off.  This year it wasn't quite chili weather; therefore, there weren't as many entries, but the variety was still outstanding.  Thank you to the six (6) people who brought their best bucket of chili for this 2nd time event. The chili was enjoyed by all of those in attendance.  Everyone who participated in the chili tasting was asked to cast a ballot for his or her favorite chili.  Following were the winners:

1st Place - Robin Joy Ernst        $50.00 in Chamber Bucks

2nd Place - Judy McDaniels        $35.00 in Chamber Bucks

3rd Place - Cindy Berkhahn         $20.00 in Chamber Bucks

Once again, Bill Flease and his staff at Crystal Falls Banquets & Catering provided excellent service.  Thank you for registering the chili cook-off contestants, heating and serving the chili.

At 7 p.m. the Chamber and the Fall Fling participants gave away over $6,000 of fabulous prizes, which were either donated by or purchased from New London businesses. To view pictures from the Fall Fling, please click on the following links:

Avoiding Scams

The first step to keeping your personal information safe is being aware that there are a lot of types of scams out there. You may have heard of phishing scams before, but you should also add vishing and smishing to your vocabulary list. Each of these is a type of scam that attempts to acquire your personal information for potential misuse.

  • Phishing is the act of trying to acquire personal information by impersonating a trustworthy source in an email or instant message.
  • Vishing is the telephone version of phishing (or voice phishing) where scammers attempt to acquire personal information through an often computer-generated phone call.
  • Smishing is the text message version of phishing (or SMS phishing) when a text, often containing a fraudulent URL or phone number, is sent in an attempt to acquire personal information.  See More...
