A Note From Our Founder Nick Tesi TNG Visual Effects Founder
September is like the final stretch of the year, not quite the last quarter but close enough for me. We would really like to make our last four months great (along with everyone else in the market, I'm sure), so let's come together and make it happen.
We are always looking at new technology and software to keep the quality of our service at the highest level, and to accelerate our pipeline. This is tricky at times, but we do our best to make it happen. We continue looking for partners who are synergistic to our service, and who can help our customers and theirs through more savings and better products. Contact us for more information. I hope you enjoy this month's newsletter, and I wish you all a great month, quarter, and year. ____________________ |
Testimonials

"I just contracted Nick Tesi and TNG for digital doubles required on an ABC television pilot. Nick has been my go to guy when it comes to digital doubles for years now. As always the work was exceptional and in this case he upped his game once more. The level of quality to the scans and textures has grown better and better every time we work together. It's because of that fact and their ability to turn around the cleaned up data quickly is why I continually go back to Nick and TNG time and time again".

3D Character Models
|
The Many Layers Of A 3D Character
Our 3D character models are like us, they have many layers that when combined give us an incredible model. Given these components, which do you think are the most important?
Many would argue that all parts of the model are important, depending on your expertise, but let's take a look at the different layers purely from a model's point of view.
- Geometry or Topology. The geometric representation of the model is the first item. The features in the face need to match the exact features of the model, and most importantly need to be realistic.
- The Eyes: The eyes need to have the correct proportions and require as much detail as possible, especially in the corners of the eyes.
- The Nose: The volume and flair of the nose needs to have proper nostril placement that is non-symmetrical.
- The Mouth: The mouth, again showing detail in the corners, needs to have proper tapering off from center to end with the correct amount of volume in the lips.
- The Chin and Ears: The size of the chin needs to be proportionate, along with the correct placement and detail of the ears.
- Texture. Texture is the great cover up, but more than just a cover up, if done right, it brings the model to life. We use flat light when we do 3D scanning so that the model can be lit to match its scene later on.
As we said earlier, many can argue that all parts of the model are important, but can you cover up any mistakes in geometry? The answer is no. In our many years of experience, we can say without a doubt that both geometry and texture need to be top quality.

3D Printing Is Now The Rage
There has been a lot of talk about printing out 3D models, and it seems like we are getting more requests for this technology and many questions about how it works. 3D printing has actually been around since the 1980's, but has never picked up the kind of hype it has lately.
This reminds me of when "going paperless" was first introduced. With the advent of computers, virtual files, archiving on hard drives, etc., everyone wanted to go paperless. What's funny is that it seems I still have just as many paper files today as I did back then. I guess you can call me old school, or say that I haven't kept up with the times, but when I go to other offices and see boxes of papers everywhere, I know I'm not alone. I think it is a great concept, but just like it took a few decades for 3D printing to become popular, I believe it will only be a matter of time before "going paperless" will be in full effect.
The same goes with creating digital characters. With visual effects, virtual turntables, the ability to re-sculpt in the computer and to save and archive files, I thought the need for models would be minimal. However, as the price decreases for 3D printers and their capability to print in detail increases, it seems like models are more important than ever. 3D printed models are not in high demand right now, but there has been a steady increase over the past year.
Here are a few ways you can use 3D printed models and/or sculptures for personal use, for your business or for a project you're working on:
- Create a 3D printed sculpture as a reward for a contribution to your Kickstarter campaign.
You can also create an outstanding marketing piece to help raise money for your campaign.
- Set up a negative so you can print multiple copies of the same item. You can print a limited edition of up to 100 sculptures/models or thousands if they are to be distributed in large amounts.
- Create a keepsake item. You can print images of celebrities, bosses, customers, relatives, or a representation of a hobby to place on a cake or shelf in your office. You can even create the figurines on your wedding cake to look exactly like you and your soon-to-be spouse. The ideas are endless.
Consider 3D printing for your next project. You may just need to replicate a character, weapon, or car. Let us help you create your next model for your video game, film, TV commercial or a nice keepsake to place on your desk.

VFX: The 3D Scanning Market
Your next project may have a list of items and/or talent that need to be 3D scanned, and your budget may be looking more anemic than plentiful. That's when you need to ask yourself if everything on that list actually needs to be scanned.
If finding where to make cuts is too early to tell, or if you are wondering how to make your budget stretch without cutting back on other visual effects, here are a couple of suggestions that may help.
-
Consider choosing the items and models that you know you absolutely need scanned right away and have the other models scanned on contingency. There may be some scanning charges, but remember the bulk of the cost is on the build out, not the scanning. This is a quick and fairly easy option to make sure you have what you need, when you need it.
- Having one vendor do all of the 3D scanning for your project is another option, and will save you on time and money. The world of visual effects gets larger as the budgets get smaller, and you need options. But what happens if at the end of the day, you need everything on your list. If you use one vendor, a lot of times they will offer a great deal on pricing. There is also the peace of mind knowing you can manage the project from one place, along with the asset point of view.
The VFX market is evolving and becoming a staple in all parts of the world. We are now seeing VFX films going off shore or being filmed in Canada. This has been giving new companies from all over the world the ability to bid on any project.
Remember to look at your options and at the capability of the company you are about to work with. Ask yourself these two questions: Will they deliver when you need it? and Can you use what they deliver? When shopping in the world market, this is the great dilemma we all face.
