The World Affairs Councils of America has been invited by the Delegation of the European Union to the U.S. to submit a national bid for a grant for an Engage America
Program
designed to raise awareness about the EU and the EU-US relationship.

The events will take place on or around Europe Day, May 9, 2014.

We are requesting councils to propose events to be included in this national grant proposal to the Delegation.

Proposals are due September 15, 2013.
About the Program

Topic

Using the time period in or around May 9, Europe Day, as a focal point, the Engage America program is designed to raise awareness, knowledge, and understanding about EU policies, the EU's role as an international actor, and the value of the EU-US relationship.

Events should have a wide European scope rather than focusing exclusively on one Member State of the EU, or bilateral relations between the US region and one Member State. Wherever possible, events / activities should highlight local and regional economic, social, and cultural connections to Europe and the local and regional impacts of those connections. Participation by EU and EU Member States' Consulate-Generals should provide the opportunity to organize such events/activities.

As TTIP (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership) will continue to strengthen the EU-US economic relations across the US, it should be one of the key topics to be covered by the events/activities.

Structure
Councils should propose activities occurring on or around May 9, 2014. Sample events and activities should include:
  • Speaker programs or conferences that feature Consulate Generals from EU member states, expert researchers, policymakers, and representatives from local and regional companies with strong EU links.
  • Cultural events such as film shows, concerts, exhibitions, literary programs, food fairs or performances
If the national bid is successful, Councils selected will be required to work in close coordination with the designated Consulate in their region to develop and implement the outreach program.

Eligibility
All councils are welcome to propose activities because consulate offices are responsible for a wide range of territory.

Target Audience
Target audiences are opinion leaders, such as media, academics, and
civil society organizations, including council membership. The audience should also include decision makers, such as State and local government authorities and the business and financial communities.

Events and activities should be widely advertised and augmented by a traditional and digital media outreach program which ensures maximum visibility, both before and after the program.

Timing
Europe Day, May 9, 2014 should be the focal point for activities. Events should occur on or around May 9.

Costs
A detailed event budget is required for the proposal to be included in the national bid submitted to the Delegation of the EU to the US. Under the national proposal, councils will be reimbursed after the submission of a final event report for $5,000 to $10,0000 to cover event costs.
