Continuing the tradition of the annual New York City Veterans Day Parade, this year the SUS community participated in the largest Veterans Day Event in the nation -- America's Parade - on behalf of our Veteran Services division.

A 360�Approach To Veterans: Thomas' Story
|
For three years in his 30's, Thomas Clifford, 52, served in the U.S. Army as a Private E2 in Germany, where he guarded a nuclear and chemical weapons depot. During his time of service, Thomas became hyper vigilant and developed paranoia, which plagued him deeply for years after returning home from service. After a traumatic breakdown he sought help, but had nowhere to go so he landed in a shelter. It's stories like Thomas' that we can't ignore. Robin Hood Veterans Initiative has featured members of SUS' Veterans Services department in a seven minute documentary film about US servicemen and women struggling to return to civilian life after coming home. Physical and mental health issues, family problems and steady employment are some of the many challenges faced by veterans upon their return. SUS Vice President of Veterans Services Brett Morash and Veterans Admin Intake Coordinator Shawn Nixon help shed light on the challenges and what's being done to face them. WATCH

SUS was proud to be a part of the team that received accolades under The New York City Continuum of Care (CoC) at the 2014 National Alliance to End Homelessness Awards, for reduction of veteran homelessness. In a recent op-ed, Syracuse University's Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) explores the necessity for the "community of providers and practitioners that serve veterans and their families, to do better to channel our efforts and resources through collective impact strategies, coordinated measurement, and continuous learning, to create strong currents that will sweep our veterans and families to the shore that they seek, rather than leave them lost at sea." To help meet this goal IVMF engaged with more than 50 organizations directly serving the leading social drivers of veteran well being (employment, housing, legal, and mental health), including SUS who they call "key to the network's daily operations."
