Joyce Melander-Dayton, Promenade

“It's all about the process,” said Joyce Melander-Dayton at the recent opening reception of the exhibition of her works, Constructions in Concert. An accomplished painter, Joyce became intrigued with the endless options in working with fibers and began an exploration of a new artistic voice in her work using time-honored textile techniques. The result is an immense freedom for dimensional design. Though the textile techniques are intensely laborious, it has given her a greater conduit to work intuitively.

Juxtaposing the influence of music and the various materials of silks, cottons and beads, Melander-Dayton captures color, texture and movement in simple, familiar forms with intertwining designs leading one on a lyrical, visual journey.

Morgan Clifford, Little Squares #2

Weavings are select pieces by Morgan Clifford. A noted weaver and professor at the University of Wisconsin River Falls, Clifford’s work explores the taking of earthy fibers and crossing them into a study of lines and symmetry.

“I am endlessly fascinated by what happens when threads are crisscrossed and grids and squares are created. The compositional devices of checks, checkerboards and lattices are natural extensions of the woven structure, so I use them in my work.” –Morgan Clifford

Mentor/Protégé Program

      Twelve Strands
Sarah Kusa, Filigree

Twelve Strands is an exhibition featuring the works of Textile Center 2011–2012 Mentor/Protg Program participants and showcasing the textile arts of felting, quilting, knit sculpture, artwear and artcloth. The Mentor/Protg Program supports the artistic and business goals of emerging fiber artists. The program fosters the continuing development of protgs’ techniques in their media through instruction and critique by the mentor to enrich the understanding and advancement of their individual work. By participating in the program, protgs gain confidence and learn to view themselves as artists in the larger arts community. The relationship between mentor and protg empowers the individual artists to take risks and work toward goals.

The mentors are Dawn Carlson Conn, Carolyn Halliday, Kimber Olson, Karen Searle and Susan Stein. The protgs are Marjorie Fedyszyn, Katherine Simon Frank, Beth Kendrick, Sarah Kusa, Melissa Nellis, Gina Sekelsky and
Beverly Westra.

Co-sponsored by Spoonflower.com

      Twelve Strands

Textile Center collaborated with Spoonflower, an online digital printing service for fabric, to offer a design challenge. Artists were given a choice of images, which varied from traffic cones to a yarn-bombed bike frame, from the Prospect Park neighborhood that they were to digitally manipulate to create original fabric designs. More than 230 designs were submitted and 45 design finalists were selected.

Those designs faced a popular vote on the Spoonflower website where anyone could vote on their favorite designs. The winning designs, printed on fabric by Spoonflower, will be exhibited in Textile Center’s Community Gallery. Challenge yourself to find the original image(s) in these unique designs!

Check Textile Center’s website for more information about Stephen Fraser’s lecture at Textile Center: "Fabric Design for the People: How Spoonflower became the YouTube of Surface Design."

      Land by Hand

Land By Hand catalogs are available for purchase in Textile Center Shop for $14.95.   Curated by Kimber Olson, the works of 15 fiber artists have been showcased in Bemidji, New York Mills and Mankato during the past year. Now it’s in Lanesboro! Textile Center wanted to make fiber art exhibitions more accessible to Minnesotans outside the metro area, and through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, we were able to do that. Don't miss it!

Joan Vorderbruggen, Upcycled Coral Reef

Upcycled Coral Reef is an award-winning storefront installation created by local designer, Joan Vorderbruggen. The entire installation was constructed using repurposed and eco-conscious materials exclusively. Secondhand crochet quilts and doilies were laundered then dyed by hand. Crochet and knit hats, scarves and baby afghans, many of which were tattered and frayed were transformed into underwater flora and fauna creatures and sewn to a large repurposed steel frame. All of the hanging fish and seahorses were crafted with felt manufactured from recycled plastic bottles, and the jellyfish from second hand doilies and repurposed yarn. This installation aims to draw attention and educate viewers to the endangerment of the world’s vast coral reefs, and the many ways that it may be protected.
