Kashrut Alerts
romaine lettuce

1) There is currently no bagged romaine lettuce available in this part of the country that can be used without checking for insects. The HKA has tried on several occasions to work with local vegetable companies, but those companies were not able to bring the product up to acceptable standards.
2) Please be advised that Whole Food's (365 Everyday Value) Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips and Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chunks are no longer certified Pareve. They are certified dairy (non-cholov Yisroel) when bearing the OK-D symbol on the label.
3)
Due to the recent discovery of increased insect infestation in broccolini, the Vaad Hoeir has revised its checking policy. We now recommend that broccolini should be washed very well with either a vegetable wash or with a food grade soap solution and then checked with a chazaka.

The procedure is as follows:

  • Place the broccolini in a bowl and add cold water to cover.
  • Add the soap or vegetable wash and thoroughly agitate for 35-45 seconds.
  • Remove the broccolini and check the water for insects.
  • If insects are present, repeat up until 3 times.
  • If insects are still present after 3 times, the broccolini must not be used.

If after the first, second or third times no insects are present in the water, take a handful of broccolini, rinse off with cold water and inspect for insects. If no insects are found, then the rest of the broccolini should washed and then used without further checking.

Is The Midrash On Pigs Meat Becoming Kosher About To Be Fulfilled?
Taken from jewishicommunity.com

There is a fascinating midrash back in Parshat Shemini which talks about the animal we know as the chazir - the pig - and its etymology. The midrash says that the word chazir is used because in the future G-d will "return" (le'hachzir) the pig to the Jewish people and it will become a kosher animal.

There are many discussions about this particular midrash, and whether it is to be taken literally or whether it is an allusion to something else. The literalists argue as to whether the pig will change and begin to chew its cud, making it kosher, or whether it will simply become permitted in its present form. The others say it is an allusion to the evil nations, such as Amalek, upon whom G-d will return punishment. Continue Reading

Kosher Aisle

New York...by Kosher Today Staff Reporters...If you walked down a kosher aisle in 1989, the chances are that you would see many brands with names like Rokeach, Haddar, and Season's in addition to the many brands that are still found today. It was the year of the first Kosherfest at the Passenger Ship Terminal in New York and a time when a researcher had accounted for approximately 16,000 kosher certified items. Other data listed 172 different kosher symbols. By comparison, the number of kosher certified items today is believed to number nearly 190,000, excluding ingredient items and the number of kosher certifications and symbols over 1300. Much has changed in the variety, quality, and character of kosher food products since 69 exhibitors first displayed their wares at Kosherfest # 1.  Continue Reading
