Just one thing on our mind!
October 2013

We are concentrating on the forthcoming virtual open day; volunteering; adding value;(why, what did you think we meant?). It started as a small event but now, thanks to some of the most influential people in the sector, it has grown into what is going to be a great day of information and advice.

It is aimed at celebrating and supporting the work of volunteers, especially trustees, both the great contribution volunteers make to their organisations, but also the difference volunteering makes to someone's life. It is taking place entirely online, with videos, live webinars, a discussion forum, virtual stalls and much more, all centred on the webpage.

There are three themes for the day; they are Governance & Trustees, Social media and Effective Planning and you can find out more about what's on offer below.

Please get involved: Register now as a special delegate to receive information about  the day or follow us on twitter using #viropday or like the FHC facebook page

GovandTruGovernance & Trustees

The main theme for the day is, of course, given that it is trustees' week about what constitutes good governance and about the part played by trustees.

We have Alex Swallow from the Small Charities Coalition talking about the value of trustees and about encouraging young people to be trustees. We have Jonathan Brinsden of Bircham Dyson Bell's charity section talking about legal responsibilities of trustees. Our own Caro Hart will be giving a live webinar at 11:00 on Good governance (you can sign up in advance here ). Our exhibitor NCVO's Studyzone will be demonstrating how training for trustees can be accessed online. There will also be the chance to contribute to the discussion forum and network (virtually) with other people.

The next webinar in the series is at 13:00 and tells the story of Franklin-Hart's journey through the social media labyrinth. This is an important way of getting an organisation's message across and Caro Hart will talk about some of the pitfalls she fell into and some of the successes when building the online profile of a small organisation. Please sign up for this webinar here.

Directly afterwards, Emma Dingle of Social Results Ltd will be the guest expert on the discussion forum - come a pick her brains. Exhibitors Directory of Social Change will be show-casing their training courses including the media one.

The DSC's Chief Exec Debra Allcock-Tyler, who is our keynote speaker, really knows how to use social media to get the message across - often in unorthodox ways ! She is an expert Twitter user - follow her here.
effplanEffective Planning

The final webinar at 16:00 is Effective Planning. learn the basics of effective planning from someone who would rather plan an annual work-stream than eat chocolate (no, really)! This seminar will cover the process from mission to team task list via strategic plan, annual plan & departmental plan and via risk planning, project plans & budgets! However, it will also show how planning needn't be some complicated thing taking up loads of time and give some hints and tips of how to do it most effectively and SMARTA! Caro Hart is an experienced planner at all levels. Sign up here for this webinar.
