Zhang Xiang to be Released to the Wild November 6th

It's official, Giant Panda Zhang Xiang, twin sister of Su Shan (named after director Suzanne Braden), will be released into the wild on November 6, 2013.  After completing 26 months of training, the two-year-old panda will be released into the Liziping Nature Reserve in the Sichuan province where male panda Tao Tao was released in October 2012.

Lin Ping is in China looking for a Mate

Lin Ping, Thailand's beloved panda (she even has a TV channel dedicated to her) has traveled to China looking for a mate.  She and her chosen partner are expected to travel back to Thailand sometime next year.   While she is in China, she is available for adoption through PI.  Remember, however, that once she returns to Thailand, we will not be able to provide updates.

Taipei's Panda Cub is "Officially" Named

After more than three months going by the nickname Yuanzai, Taipei Zoo's panda cub has finally gotten a real name thanks to online voters -- who unsurprisingly felt that the nickname was already a perfect fit.

Atlanta's Twins Receive the Gift of Names on their 100th Day

Keeping with Chinese tradition, the twins at the Atlanta Zoo were given their names on their 100th day of life.  Cub A and Cub B, both males, received the names Mei Lun and Mei Huan, derived from a Chinese idiom meaning "something indescribably beautiful and magnificent".  The names were chosen by the public through online voting.

Memphis Zoo Renews Contract for 10 More Years

The Memphis Zoo has extended its contract with China to keep pandas at the zoo for 10 more years. This year marked the end of Ya Ya and Le Le's first 10 year contract and the renewed contract ensures that pandas will still be among the zoo's residents for at least the next decade.

Pandas More Resilient to Change than Other Endangered Animals

Livescience.com posted an article recently talking about the genetic diversity of the Giant Panda.  Specifically, research shows that the Giant Panda's immune system is quite diverse suggesting that they may be more resilient to environmental change than previously thought.  The data collected may be used to help further develop the captive breeding programs that help perpetuate diversity and prioritize habitat restoration projects.
