In a tradition dating back to the very first class, the DBCR community recently celebrated the Class of 2015 in a special leadership pinning ceremony and prayer service acknowledging their special role in our school community and offering prayers of blessing over them as they toil through this demanding time of college applications, work, second quarter school work, and a busy season of school activities. The program culminated in celebrating a record-setting number of seniors who have gained acceptance into 4-year colleges. The accepted students received black and gold ties or gold scarves as a symbol of their achievement. The ceremony reminded the entire student body that every student is striving for a college degree.

It's the most wonderful time of the year, right? Recruitment season! At least that's what Mr. Alberto Rios, Director of Admissions, would say. And certainly after the much anticipated and highly successful Open House held on November 15th, we couldn't agree more. Open House has become a school-wide effort to welcome families and future students to the campus to experience the spirit of Don Bosco Cristo Rey firsthand, ask questions, and get the straight story directly from current students. Highlights of this year's Open House included a large turnout, and the enthusiasm students and families expressed regarding the new Academic Wing, our 100% high school graduation and college acceptance rates, the rigorous academic program, and, most especially, the opportunity to gain real job experience through the Corporate Work Study Program.

Distinguished Faculty Awards Announced

Heartfelt congratulations are extended to Ms. Kristin Jackson-Nesmith and Mr. Elias Blanco who recently received distinguished faculty awards at this year's Archdiocesan High School Principals' Association Professional Development Day. Noting the various roles in which he has served since Don Bosco Cristo Rey (DBCR) opened in 2007, Mr. Blanco received the DBCR Veteran Teacher of the Year Award for his dedication and passion for helping students use their gifts to graduate from high school and college and become good Christians and honest citizens. Ms. Jackson-Nesmith was awarded DBCR's New Teacher of the Year Award for her enthusiastic teaching style and ability to engage students in the love of mathematics. As they both receive these awards, we celebrate the assets they and all of our faculty are to our community and the positive impact they make every day.

Cheerleaders Share Holiday Cheer & Receive Special Christmas Gift in Return

Have you ever had the opportunity to sit and talk with someone who is 107 years old? Our cheerleaders did this past weekend, as they volunteered at a very special Christmas gift event at the DC Veterans Medical Center. They helped wheel Veterans around a Christmas gift fair to select whatever they might need for themselves or as gifts for their loved ones, since they are unable to get out and shop. Though the squad expected to be helpful with with the patients' "shopping" and getting presents wrapped, they felt they received the true gift that day by interacting with Vets and listening to the stories of their heroic lives. One woman, Ms. Dickinson, made a particularly strong impression on the cheerleaders as she recounted her experiences serving in the Army in France in the 1940s. Now 107 years old, she's still sharp as a tack and brought history to life through her stories.

The Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP) is thrilled to announce the start of a full job team of students working at the U.S. Department of Labor. Following Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez's visit to DBCR last December, the Department successfully submitted a Request for Proposal (RFP) that documents a three-year commitment to employ DBCR students and to learn more about CWSP. Hopefully a similar model can be implemented throughout the Federal Government. Dedicated to building its future work force, the Department recognizes the value of the Cristo Rey Work Study Program that begins in high school and will no doubt help to fill vacancies as baby boomers retire. Working with the Audio and Visual Team, DBCR Senior RJ Tuban notes what a dream job it is for him. "I am able to share my experience in video editing with my supervisors and at the same time gain knowledge from them. It really helps enhance my skills for the future!"

Five special students joined Fr. Steve Shafran, SDB, Brother Tom Sweeney, SDB, and Ana Chapa, Assistant Principal for Student Life, as guests of the Speaker of the House, John Boehner, for the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at the U.S. Capitol. Selected for the excellence they demonstrate in their work study jobs as seen in their attendance, supervisor comments and assignments, Kenzie Cromartie, Abigail Boateng, Jason Bonilla, Kevin Guerrero, and Jude Eguia also were treated to a private tour of the Capitol by staff member, Seton Easby-Smith, following the Christmas tree lighting and reception. The tour was the highlight of the evening for the students, explained Sophomore Jason Bonilla, who noted how cool it was to learn little-known facts about the history of the Capitol Rotunda being built as well as its present day construction.
