Fritz Stern Dissertation Prize 2014

Since 1997, the Friends of the German Historical Institute have awarded the Fritz Stern Dissertation Prize for the two best doctoral dissertations on German history written at North American universities. Dissertations on all periods of German history, on German-American relations, and on the history of Germans in North America are eligible. The winners are invited to the GHI (German Historical Insitute) to present their research at the annual symposium of the Friends in November. The prizewinners receive an award of $2,000 and reimbursement for travel to Washington D.C.

Candidates are nominated by their dissertation advisers. Their dissertations must have been completed, defended, and authenticated between January 1 and December 31. The prize committee will accept nominations through May 31, 2014, and will announce the prize winners at the end of the summer.

Dissertation advisers should submit a letter of nomination along with an abstract (1-3 pages) of the dissertation via e-mail in PDF or Word format to

Study Europe and the European Union from the unique vantage point of one of Germany‘s most prestigious universities! The University of T�bingen offers you ideal conditions to focus on European politics, business, history, law, and culture.

Summer Program � 15 July � 23 August 2014 (6 weeks)
Semester Program � 1 September � 29 November 2014 (3 months)

Both programs are taught entirely in English and provide the possibility of obtaining course credit. The program is open to undergraduate students from all countries and of all majors. Participation in either one or both of the programs is possible.

Each program offers academic courses on different levels focusing on European politics, history, business, law, cultural studies, and media. The courses are taught by University of T�bingen faculty and participants will benefit from the expertise of T�bingen academics.





In excursions participants will explore how European institutions were shaped and operate today: students will visit the European Parliament in Strasbourg, the historical center and government district in Berlin and the European Central Bank in Frankfurt. Field trips to multinational corporations such as Daimler in Stuttgart are also part of the program.

The syllabus includes German language courses and an intercultural workshop. Intercultural exchange will be encouraged via various social activities, and participants will be involved in student life in T�bingen.

The application deadline is 15 May 2014 for the Summer Program and 31 May 2014 for the Semester Program.

Women in German (WiG) Best Article Prize

WiG invites nominations for the Best Article award. The purpose of this award is to recognize excellent research and scholarship in the field of feminist German studies. The prize is conferred anually and was awarded for the first time in 2004. The author of the article selected will receive a $500 cash award and a certificate of recognition.

Eligibility
The article must be published in a journal issue or collection with a publication date in the year prior to the conference at which it will be announced (e.g., a 2013 publication date for the prize announced in Oct. 2014). The work must present original new research that makes a significant contribution to the field of feminist German studies. The author must be a current WiG member. Articles may be written in either German or English.

Fellowships in Enviornmental Disciplines

The Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society at LMU Munich invites applications for its 2014�15 class of postdoctoral and senior fellows. The fellowship program, directed by Christof Mauch (LMU Munich) and Helmuth Trischler (Deutsches Museum) is designed to bring to Munich a cohort of excellent scholars who are working in the environmental humanities and related disciplines.
