Welcome Olga Tomchin!olga

Through a Soros Justice Fellowship, Olga Tomchin has started an immigration detention project at Transgender Law Center. The project will advocate for the human rights of transgender people in immigration detention, particularly undocumented trans women of color.

Olga will work to change problematic policies in immigration detention centers in the western U.S. such as housing trans women with men, locking trans people away in solitary confinement on the basis of their gender identity, sexual humiliation and abuse, and denial of necessary medical care and gendered items. The project also aims to increase the capacity of immigration attorneys to effectively represent detained trans immigrants with cultural competency to fight against deportation and for release from detention.

Brief Submitted to European Court of Human Rights on Finland's Discriminatory Marriage Lawsfinland

Transgender Law Center has submitted a brief to the European Court of Human Rights in a significant transgender-rights case, Hmlinen v. Finland. Finland, like several other countries in the European Union, has a law that prohibits married transgender people from having their gender legally recognized. In other words, in order to get a legal gender change in Finland, a person must be either single or, if married, get divorced. This kind of law creates an impossible and unfair choice between the fundamental human right to marry and the right to have one's gender legally recognized.

Brief Filed in AZ Transgender Marriage Casebeatie
Thomas Beatie

Transgender Law Center recently filed a friend-of-the-court brief with the Arizona Court of Appeals in response to an Arizona Superior Court ruling that a transgender man's marriage was invalid.

Thomas Beatie has lived as a man for the past 15 years. Before he and his wife married in 2003, Mr. Beatie had undergone significant medical treatment as part of his gender transition -- including surgery and hormone treatment -- and legally changed the gender marker on his birth certificate. Last year, though, an Arizona Superior Court denied the couple's request for a divorce, holding that Thomas was legally female because he had given birth to the couple's children. The couple appealed that decision to the Arizona Court of Appeals.

Victory for Gender Nonconforming Student! madison

Transgender Law Center recently helped Madison, a gender nonconforming student in the Los Angeles area, respond to discrimination by The ACT, a college admissions testing service.

Madison was prevented from taking the exam in May because the proctor stated that the pictures on her ACT admissions ticket and on her school ID card were not the same. However, other gender nonconforming students were not excluded from the exam, nor is matching identification a published requirement for test takers. Additionally, Madison had taken the SAT using the same ID at the same school the week before without incident.

Adventures in Health Care!health

Ignatius Bau, Masen Davis, Kellan Baker
Transgender Law Center is proud to be participating in nationwide efforts to ensure transgender people are able to access quality, affordable health care under the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.
Recently our Executive Director participated in a White House Briefing on Obamacare and LGBT Health.

Stay tuned because Anand Kalra, TLC Project HEALTH Manager will be releasing a 4-part series to help you get a clear picture of the transgender health care landscape under the new policies including:

  • which barriers to health care have been removed and which still exist,
  • how individual trans people can navigate this changing landscape with greater success than before, and
  • how trans people and our allies can work together to bring more and better health care to everybody
CA School Crowns Transgender Homecoming Queenqueen

Cassidy Lynn Campbell
source: LA Times

Cassidy Lynn Campbell of Huntington Beach, California was named Homecoming Queen of Marina High School on Friday, September 20. Transgender Law Center sends a big congrats her way!

Marina High School has policies in place to make sure transgender students like Cassidy are able to fully participate at school as their authentic selves and has embraced Campbell as a part of the student body just like all the other girls.

Cassidy has been experiencing a lot of publicity, and with that comes backlash, pressure, and a lot of emotions. Please send her your love on the comments section of our blog.

Kasey Caron

Kasey Caron is a transgender student in western Pennsylvania who is supported by his friends and family, but his school won't allow him to run for Homecoming King.
