From the Desk of Dr. Sinnott... |
 It has been over 4 months since I became Chairman of Internal Medicine. I have to reiterate how impressive the faculty are in our divisions and centers. We are moving into some of the busiest months for the department: new residents matched, trainees graduating, research proposals submitted, the end of a fiscal year and the start of a new one. As we move forward with our strategic planning process and the development of our strategic plan, I encourage you all to be involved in the process. From faculty focus groups to google groups, sharepoint intranets, and social media tools, your input is actively sought and is necessary for us to build the infrastructure we need to effectively advance the department.
A first step is to stay informed about the Department's activities. If you are on facebook I encourage you to "like our page" so you can receive the latest news and comment with other faculty, staff, fellows, residents, students and friends of the department through this portal. The more connected we are, the more we can function as a team.

POINTS OF PROGRESS
In each issue, I will highlight top five achievements in the time between internal newsletters. Here are some successes from this past month to celebrate:
(1) Robert Ledford, MD was instrumental in opening a medical observation unit at TGH.
This is a designated patient care area for ER patients who need follow up care but don't require an admission. It demonstrates the DOIM's commitment to delivering high quality care and potential to develop quality partnerships.
(2) In collaboration with Jeff Lowenkron, MD, Candace Mateja, DO was instrumental in creating a new in-patient follow-up system at TGH.
This will increase the number of patient referrals we receive in our outpatient center.
(3) Douglas Holt, MD, FACP was instrumental in the recruitment of Jamie Morano, MD, MPH, a NIH T-32 Fellow graduating from the Infectious Disease program at Yale.
This will enhance the impact of the Infectious Disease division and enhance research opportunities.
(4) Through the efforts of Cuc Mai, MD and her team, we matched 29 high quality Internal Medicine residents, 12 from USF Morsani College of Medicine.
This diverse and talented group of residents from across the US will strengthen our residency program. Dr. Mai and her team did an excellent job recruiting.
(5) The DOIM has begun its first intensive strategic planning process.
This will provide our faculty and staff with a clear strategic direction and a solid foundation with which to advance the DOIM.

STATE OF THE DEPARTMENT FACULTY MEETING - THURSDAY MAY 30TH - 5:15PM
The Chairman will hold a State of the Department Faculty Meeting on Friday June 7th beginning at noon. Dr. Sinnott will share the outcomes of the strategic planning retreat, provide an update on the departments overall activities, and Dr. Jeff Lowenkron will provide information on Pay-for-Performance.
All faculty and staff are invited. Faculty are expected to attend.

ENRICHMENT SEMINAR: FINANCIAL PLANNING - Wed. May 8th
Our first enrichment seminar will focus on financial planning by Kathleen Rehl, PhD of Rehl Financial Advisors. She will educate us on choosing a financial advisor. I encourage you to attend and RSVP promptly. This seminar is open to all faculty, residents and staff with a vested interest in learning how to sustain financial security for yourself and family. Dr. Rehl will discuss the importance of retaining a personal advisor rather than buying pre-packaged economic bundles or simply trading stocks.
The seminar will be held on Wednesday, May 8th at 6pm, at STC 5051. Dinner will be provided.

Star Staff Spotlight: Going Above and Beyond

Shenita Crum
Medical Assistant, General Internal Medicine
USF Morsani Center for Advanced Clinical Care
Shenita has been nominated as a Star Staff Member by Kevin O'Brien, MD because she went above and beyond the call of duty to administer antibiotics to a dialysis patient with a urinary tract infection. The multi-drug resistant pathogen was resistant to all oral antibiotics. Shenita administered daily intramuscular injections during the week at the clinic and continued the course of the regimen on Saturday and Sunday by personally going to the patient's home. A hospital admission was avoided, and the patient completely recovered.
According to Dr. O'Brien, Shenita exemplifies Francis Peabody's aphorism:
"One of the essential qualities of the clinician is interest in humanity, for the secret of the care of the patient is in caring for the patient" -Francis Peabody 1927
About Shenita
Shenita joined USF in October 2010 and works as a medical assistant in General Internal Medicine and runs the resident clinic. She enjoys riding motorcycles and going to the beach. She says working and helping others is her passion.

Patient-Centered Teaching: Preparing Tomorrow's Leaders

Division of Hospital Medicine
David Ecker MD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine and a clinician with the Division of Hospital Medicine. Dr. Ecker has incorporated his training from outstanding bedside clinicians to improve the physical diagnosis skills of our residents and students. He has created a unique lecture series inspired by the Stanford Medicine 25. Created by Abraham Verghese, MD, MACP, the Stanford Medicine 25 is an interactive dynamic learning process, which returns residents to the bedside and reviews their physical diagnosis skills across 25 topics.

Dr. Ecker attended Tulane University's School of Medicine and completed his Internal Medicine Residency at New York University. He was a Hospitalist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center prior to joining the USF Faculty in 2012.

Patient-Centered Research: Innovative Ideas
|
 Narasaiah Kolliputi, PhD Assistant Professor
Division of Allergy & Immunology
Narasaiah Kolliputi, PhD is studying the mechanisms that cause acute lung injury (ALI) and respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). ALI/ARDS can be caused by many reasons including direct lung injury from infection or indirect injury from trauma, sepsis, pancreatitis, transfusions, breathing in toxic fumes, radiation or drug overdose. It is fatal approximately 40 percent of the time.
Dr. Kolliputi's research focuses on a large complex of proteins that facilitate inflammation, known as inflammasomes, and finding a way to check the abnormal immune response and inflammation that lead to a build-up of fluids in the lungs, leaky blood vessels and inflammation.
He has published many research articles in peer-reviewed journals including Journal of Immunology and Circulation research. He is an Associate Editor for Frontiers in Respiratory Pharmacology, Front iers in Oxidant Physiology and Frontiers in Non-coding RNA. He is currently serving as an ad-hoc grant review member for the National Institute of Health (2013), Department of Defense (2011, 2012) and American Heart Association (2011, 2012, and 2013). He has been invited to speak at top-tier US academic institutions (Emory University, Atlanta, GA and Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN) and various national and international scientific conferences including American Thoracic Society and American Physiological Society annual meetings. Dr. Kolliputi was awarded the Independent National Scientist Development Grant from the American Heart Association and a 5-year $1.83 million grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute to support his work.
His graduate research assistants have presented their findings at numerous conferences, to include the AAAAI Annual Meeting and the American Physiological Society's Experimental Biology Meeting. One of his students received the Outstanding Poster Award at the 2013 USF Research Day.

Patient-Centered Care: Putting Compassion into Practice

The beginning of April Dr. Sinnott received an email regarding the passing of a former faculty of the Morsani College of Medicine. The patient was an OB/GYN who had worked with USF and Women's Health Care at Tampa General Hospital. The message came from Catherine Lynch, MD, Associate Vice President for Women's Health and Faculty Development and Associate Dean of the Morsani College of Medicine. It read:
I just finished speaking with the patient's wife regarding the death of her husband, our colleague. April as she told me about the events on Saturday afternoon and evening could not have been more grateful regarding the care that she received, especially from Dr. Phu Nguyen. She said he was compassionate, caring, competent and remained cool despite the patient's rapid deterioration. She felt that his excellent care was remarkable and wanted to make sure that he was appropriately recognized for his outstanding bedside manner and clinical care. Clearly, his actions and behaviors were a bright light at a very dark time for her, and she wanted word of Dr. Nguyen's performance to be recognized. As she told me about her whole experience she stopped several times to mention how excellent she felt the care was from the MICU team, and especially Dr. Nguyen.
