Teralta Park National Night Out

The Inaugural Teralta Park Night Out event celebrated of the partnership between residents, city officials and other local stakeholders in transforming Teralta Park into a safe and family-friendly neighborhood gem.

The event highlighted the unique history of the park, celebrated the community's accomplishments and promoted continued positive change in the neighborhood. The Teralta Night Out brought together residents, business owners and organizations and hosted free activities for all ages such as, music,  BBQ, jumpers, a mobile arcade, raffles, and candlelight walk for peace around the park.

An estimated 800 members of the community came to enjoy the free, family friendly festivities. During the event we were also honored to have Marti Emerald, Todd Gloria, and PoliceChief Lansdowne stop by to say a few words about park and neighborhood safety. The success of this event was the result of fantastic collaboration between City Heights CDC, City Heights residents, other community based organizations and San Diego Parks and Recreation. We will continue to work toward safer parks and neighborhoods in City Heights, and look forward to making our 2014 Teralta Park Night Out as spectacular as the first.

You can find pictures of the event posted on the City Heights CDC Facebook Page.

 CicloSDias

Approximately 15,000 people, including many City Heights residents, took to the streets on foot or on wheels for San Diego's 1st-ever, car-free, "Open Streets" event - CicloSDias. "Open Streets" events have been sweeping the continent, but on Sunday, August 11, San Diego and City Heights experienced it for the first time in our own backyard.

The event was a collaborative effort involving the City of San Diego, San Diego County Bicycle Coalition, Bike SD, BAME CDC, City Heights CDC, Walk San Diego, small businesses, community leaders, and more. City Heights CDC lead the City Heights element of the event and specifically the hubs at 35th & Wightman and 38th & Wightman.

The event kicked-off with a press conference in City Heights next to Cherokee Point Elementary School featuring Councilmember Marti Emerald, Councilmember David Alvarez, County Supervisor Dave Roberts, community members, and event organizers. From there, the route traveled west down Wightman Street passed the hub at 35th & Wightman which featured music, a BMX/skate rail, and free bike maintenance by Bikes Del Pueblo. The route continued further west and passed the I-805 on Landis Street and made a turn onto 30th Street. Along 30th Street there were dozens of activities organized by local businesses, advocates, and neighborhood leaders in the North Park, South Park, Golden Hill, and Grant Hill neighborhoods. The route's southern bookend was in Grant Hill at 30th & K, organized by BAME CDC.

The route was open all day for non-motorized traffic. Families and friends reactivated and reclaimed over 5 miles of public space. Smiles were everywhere. See for yourself by checking out the photos on the City Heights CDC Facebook page.

This collaborative event was a huge success. Thanks to everyone - the City, community members, advocates, volunteers, and donors -- who helped make this event happen.

HC "Jay" Powell Youth Scholarship Fundraiser

Summer vacation's almost over and students will soon return to their classrooms. But we recognize the reality that educational opportunities are not available equally to all. Some prospective students and their parents in City Heights are taking a long hard look at the cost of going to school and discovering that it's beyond their means.

At City Heights CDC we want as many young people as possible to have the opportunity to pursue higher education. On his retirement Jay Powell, our former Executive Director of 20 years, set up the Scholarship Fund to make the dream of higher education a reality for more young people in City Heights who otherwise couldn't afford it. This reception promises to be entertaining and informative, and a great opportunity to network with friends and colleagues. We look forard to raising $5,000 for the H C "Jay" Powell Scholarship Fund at this event to send more City Heights students to college! If you or anyone you know is interested in donating to the fund or attending the event, please visit our website or contact Kendyll Marksbury at 619-961-1050. Your contribution is greatly appreciated!
