3 SERMON SERIES ON JONAH IN JANUARY, CONTINUES THIS SUNDAY -
On Sundays, January 11, 18, and 25, Rev. Larry Miller will preach a new 3 sermon series on the book of Jonah from the Old Testament.  The Scriptures and sermon titles are: Jonah 1:1-16 on "Fleeing God's Presence"; Jonah 1:17 - 2:10 on "God's Grace Is As Big As A Whale"; and Jonah 3:1 - 4:11 on "The Hound Of Heaven".

Jonah is a simple, but fascinating, story of a man commanded by God to prophesy to the neighboring enemy country.  You are encouraged to read this short, 4 chapter book of Jonah, and then come prepared to see how we aren't too different from Jonah, and how we can discover some of the same truths of God that Jonah did.

BBQ CHICKEN DINNER TICKETS -
Our annual BBQ Chicken Dinner will take place on Tuesday, Feb 10th.  Dinners are $8 each, which purchases a 1/4 chicken, dirty rice, salad, roll and a brownie.  Find a Youth Choir member of Boy Scout on Sunday and purchase your tickets!

Join The Missions & Outreach Committee for Our Church's...

Did you know that according to the USDA, 1 in 6 Louisiana households (more than 784,000 family members) struggle to put food on the table? Did you know that every two minutes someone in the US is sexually assaulted or that 1 in 4 college women will be victims of sexual assault during her academic career? Did you know that Baton Rouge has one of the highest per capita rates of new AIDS cases in the nation?

So what can we, as the church, do?

Join the Missions and Outreach Committee as we educate ourselves and our congregation about the needs of our community in our church's first Teach-In. This event will take place in the University UMC Fellowship Hall on three consecutive Thursday nights from 6:30-8:00PM as we listen to experts in their field, ask questions, and join in discussion. Come be a part of navigating how we as a congregation can best respond to the needs of our community.

January 22 - Hunger
For this event, please considering bringing non-perishable food items for donation. All food will be brought to the HOPE ministries choice food pantry to help those in our community.
January 29 - Sexual Assault
February 5 - AIDS

If you have any questions please contact Rev. Colleen Bookter at [email protected] or 344-0343.

Love Offering Being Received for Mr. George Laphand

Our church custodian for the last 43 years, Mr. George Laphand, will have his last day of work at our church on March 27.  If you would like to give a love offering to thank Mr. George for his lifetime of service to our church, please make your check to UUMC and in the memo section of your check please note: "love offering for Mr. George".  We will present him with one "love offering" check, as well as his final paycheck, on March 27.  Also, if you would like to write a thank you card or note to him, you can put that in an envelope marked "Mr. George", and get it to the office before March 27.  We will present these letters and cards at the same time we present him with his love offering. Mr. George started at UUMC in 1972 during the Rev. Dr. Lamar Smith's tenure, and he has outlasted numerous pastors and office staff during those 43 years.  After March 27 the church will utilize a cleaning service to handle the duties Mr. George took care of on a daily basis.
Souper Bowl of Caring & Our Annual Soup Potluck

MORE THAN 20 YEARS AGO, the Souper Bowl of Caring began
with a simple prayer from a single youth group:
"Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl
football game, help us be mindful of
those without a bowl of soup to eat."

Since that day, more than $98 million has been raised for local charities across the country through Souper Bowl of Caring. It has become a powerful movement that is transforming the time around Super Bowl weekend into the nation's largest celebration of giving and serving.

Through this mission, young people learn what it's like to make a positive difference in the world - as they collect food, raise money and volunteer to work in charities that provide shelter to the homeless, food to the hungry and compassion to those in need.

Be part of this movement that is sharing God's love with those in need. On February 1, please give generously on Super Bowl Sunday. Every dollar donated at UUMC will go towards HOPE Ministries Food Pantry, our 2014 Souper Bowl of Caring charity of choice.

Our Youth will be standing at the back of the church on this day with soup pots to collect your financial donations and there will be a place in the fellowship hall for any food donations you bring for this Souper Bowl Sunday, which just happens to coincide with our regular First Sunday Food Drive for HOPE Ministries.

Also, please join us that day for...

The UUMC Annual Soup Potluck
on February 1, 2014
at Noon in the Fellowship Hall

Bring your prepared soup in a crock pot or chafing dish and bring it to the fellowship hall before the 11am worship on that day so that all the soup will be warm and ready to serve after worship! Also, if you are willing, bring your recipe to share and it will be put on our church website and linked in our newsletter for our congregation to access!

Everyone is welcome to join us for this free lunch, even if you aren't able to bring a soup to share! We look forward to this time of fellowship with you!

Also, stop by the Chapel Choir Bake Sale table that day to help support them

and their spring musical! Thank you!

Kids Hope News

It's great seeing everyone back in action at UT!  When the children saw me coming into the school on Tuesday morning,  many of them ran up to me to tell me that their mentor hadn't been coming.  I explained to them that we've been taking a break for the holidays but that their mentor would be coming to see them very soon.  They wanted to know why we needed a break and said they hoped we wouldn't take anymore!  They live for your visits and thrive on your love.  Thank you so much for giving them the gift of your presence.  It means the world to them.

Our intern, Caroline Palmer, isn't able to be in the Kids Hope room this semester due to her class schedule.  Hopefully, if her schedule allows, she'll be able to return in the Fall.  Please welcome, mentor and intern for this semester, Ashley Goins!  Ashley is a Family/Child Studies Major and will be a great asset to our program.  You will most often see her in the Kids Hope room on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  Don't hesitate to ask her for help or guidance.

Important Upcoming Dates:
Tuesday, Jan. 20th - All volunteering at UT resumes
Wednesday, Feb.11th - Early Release Day at UT - No Volunteering
Feb. 16th-20th - Mardi Gras Holiday - No Volunteering
Friday, March 13th - Conference Day at UT - No Volunteering
Wednesday, March 18th - Phase I Leap Testing at UT - No Volunteering

Tuesday, May 19th 10:00am - 5th Grade Recognition Ceremony - UUMC Sanctuary

I hope to see you at the Teach-In Educational Series on Thursday nights from 6:30-8:00pm in the Fellowship Hall.  The information presented will be very relevant to all Kids Hope volunteers and our efforts at UT.

WORSHIP SERVICES AT NOON ON THE
7 WEDNESDAYS OF LENT
Please calendar 12:15 - 12:45 p.m. each of the 7 Wednesdays of Lent for a special time of worship in the sanctuary of UUMC.  We'll begin with the Ash Wednesday service on February 18, and we'll conclude with The Stations of the Cross worship service on April 1 of Holy Week.  Each week promises to be a brief but powerful worship service to draw us closer to God during this season of Lent.  We've scheduled the services from 12:15 - 12:45 so you can hopefully have time to drive from and back to work each Wednesday during Lent.  Some may even choose to fast at noon each Wednesday of Lent as another spiritual means of grace.
